After a hiatus of several centuries, formal commentary by Eustratius and Michael of Ephesus reappears in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries, apparently sponsored by Anna Comnena

The Beit Yosef is a huge commentary on the Tur in which Rabbi Karo traces the development of each law from the Talmud through later rabbinical literature ( examining thirty-two authorities, beginning with the Talmud and ending with the works of Rabbi Israel Isserlein ).

The Mishnah Berurah of Rabbi Yisroel Meir ha-Kohen, ( the " Chofetz Chaim ", Poland, 1838 – 1933 ) is a commentary on the " Orach Chayim " section of the Shulchan Aruch, discussing the application of each Halakha in light of all subsequent Acharonic decisions.

The Medieval rabbinic figure Maimonides ( Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon ), also known as the Rambam, wrote a commentary to tractate Sanhedrin stressing a relatively naturalistic interpretation of the Messiah and de-emphasizing miraculous elements.

* A prominent commentary from the 19th century is Tiferet Yisrael by Rabbi Israel Lipschitz.

* Rabbi Yehuda Leib Ginsburg wrote a commentary looking for the ethical messages found within the text in his " Musar HaMishnah ".

Based on the same core material as Mekhilta de Rabbi Ishmael, it followed a second route of commentary and editing, and eventually emerged as a distinct work.

Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi wrote that " Rashi ’ s commentary on Torah is the ‘ wine of Torah ’.

Scholars believe that the commentary which appears under Rashi's name in those books was compiled by the students of Rabbi Saadiah of the Rhine, who incorporated material from Rashi's yeshiva.

Rashi's students, Rabbi Shemaya and Rabbi Yosef, edited the final commentary on the Torah ; some of their own notes and additions also made their way into the version we have today.

Of note in recent times is Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson's novel interpretation of Rashi's commentary, which was delivered in a series of public talks that began in 1964 and continued for over 25 years.

This was discouraged by Rabbi David HaLevi Segal in his commentary to the Shulchan Aruch.

The Talmud El Am contains Hebrew text, English translation and commentary by Rabbi Dr A. Ehrman, with short ' realia ', marginal notes, often illustrated, written by experts in the field for the whole of Tractate Berakhot, 2 chapters of Bava Mezia and the halachic section of Qiddushin, chapter 1.

By far the best known commentary on the Babylonian Talmud is that of Rashi ( Rabbi Solomon ben Isaac, 1040 – 1105 ).

The Tosefta has been translated into English by Rabbi Jacob Neusner and his students in the commentary cited above, also published separately as The Tosefta: translated from the Hebrew ( 6 vols, 1977-86 )
