Begun in early life and published in Naples in 1504, the Arcadia is a pastoral Romance, in which Sincero, the persona of the poet, disappointed in love, withdraws from the city ( Naples in this case ) to pursue in Arcadia an idealized pastoral existence among the shepherd-poets, in the manner of the Idylls of Theocritus.
Another example of the mention of this perfect relationship between man and nature is Theocritus ' poem Idylls 1 in which we see an encounter of a shepherd and a goatherd who meet in the pastures.
Pastoral literature continued after Hesiod with the poetry of the Hellenistic Greek Theocritus, several of whose Idylls are set in the countryside ( probably reflecting the landscape of the island of Cos where the poet lived ) and involve dialogues between herdsmen.

Virgil took the idealized Sicilian rustics that had first appeared in the Idylls of Theocritus and set them in the primitive Greek district of Arcadia ( see Eclogues VII and X ).

Thus for example Theocritus presents catalogues of heroines in two of his bucolic poems ( 3. 40 – 51 and 20. 34 – 41 ), where both passages are recited in character by lovelorn rustics.
Although the full story was described by Ovid, it was also mentioned by Philoxenus and Theocritus, and in Valerius Flaccus ' version of Argonautica, among the themes painted on the Argos, " Cyclops from the Sicilian shore calls Galatea back.
Hesiod described one group of cyclopes and the epic poet Homer described another, though other accounts have also been written by the playwright Euripides, poet Theocritus and Roman epic poet Virgil.

It is clear that at a very early date two collections were made: one consisting of poems whose authorship was doubtful yet formed a corpus of bucolic poetry, the other a strict collection of those works considered to have been composed by Theocritus himself.
