According to the US Census Bureau, the Toledo Metropolitan Area covers 4 Ohio counties and combines with other micropolitan areas and counties for a combined statistical area.

It is the principal city in the Toledo Metropolitan Statistical Area which had a population of 651, 429, while the larger Toledo-Fremont Combined Statistical Area had a population of 712, 373.

Local bus service is provided by the Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority ; commonly shortened to TARTA.

Wood County is part of the Toledo Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Lucas County is part of the Toledo Metropolitan Area.

The Hancock County area has a strong connection with the Toledo Metropolitan Area and upon other opinions, it is sometimes considered part of the metropolitan area.

Fulton County is part of the Toledo Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Monroe County is also officially part of the larger Detroit – Ann Arbor – Flint CSA and sometimes unofficially included as a northerly extension of the Toledo Metropolitan Area.
