The city is located at, in a mountain valley called Valle de la Ermita in the south central part of the country Guatemala.

In Mexico, Merlot is cultivated primarily in the Valle de Guadalupe of Baja California, the country's main wine producing area.

Originally founded in what is now the archaeological site Ciudad Vieja, north of the present-day city, it was moved to the Valle de Las Hamacas or the Acelhuate Valley, named so due to the intense seismic activity that characterizes it.

A large regional park, the Parque Regional de Carrascoy y el Valle, lies just to the south of the city.
