In 2004, President Chen Shui-bian was re-elected by a narrow margin following a controversial assassination attempt on him and the Vice President Annette Lu only hours before the election.

President Chen narrowly won the election over Lien Chan.

After the recount, President Chen was confirmed the winner of the election by a smaller margin ( 25, 563 as opposed to 29, 518 originally ).

Premier Frank Hsieh, DPP election organizer and former mayor of Kaohsiung twice tendered a verbal resignation immediately following the election, but his resignation was not accepted by President Chen until January 17, 2006 after the DPP chairmanship election had concluded.

President Chen had offered the position of Presidential Office Secretary-General ( vacated by Su ) to the departing premier, but Hsieh declined and left office criticizing President Chen for his tough line on dealing with the PRC.

A diplomatic row with China erupted on 5 May 2005, when President Chen Shui-bian of Taiwan arrived for a private visit and was welcomed at a private function at Suva's Sheraton Resort by Vice-President Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi, Ratu Ovini Bokini ( Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs ), Senate President Taito Waqavakatoga and several other Senators and MPs, and several judges including Chief Justice Daniel Fatiaki.

Foreign Minister Kaliopate Tavola asserted that those who attended the welcoming ceremony did so " of their own accord ," not as government representatives, and that Prime Minister Qarase's presence in the same hotel where President Chen was staying was purely " coincidental.

In January 2007 de Klerk was a speaker promoting peace and democracy in the world at the " Towards a Global Forum on New Democracies " event in Taipei, Taiwan, along with other dignitaries including Poland's Lech Wałęsa and now former Taiwan President Chen Shui-Bian.

In May 2005, Chen Shui-bian, President of the Republic of China ( Taiwan ), became the first foreign head of state to make an official visit to the Marshall Islands.

Chen Binghe also met President Pohamba that day.

In April 2005, during a state visit to the Marshall Islands, ROC President Chen Shui-bian met and spoke with the Nauruan President Ludwig Scotty.

In 2004, President Chen was re-elected to a second four year term after an assassination attempt which occurred the day before the election.

During the legislative elections held on 8 December 2004, the Kuomintang-PFP dominated Pan-Blue alliance gained a slim majority in the elections which resulted into President Chen resigning as DPP chairman.

In a twist of events, President Chen and PFP Chairman Soong held a summit and the independence-leaning president indicated that eventual reunification with mainland China would be an option.

Before the opening of the 14th National Congress of the CPC in 1992, the Party's senior leaders, including Deng and Chen Yun, were to select candidates for the Politburo Standing Committee to ensure a smooth transition of power from the so-called second-generation leaders ( Deng, Chen, Li Xiannian, Wang Zhen, etc.

On 27 February 2006, Chen dismantled the National Unification Council and Guidelines saying they " will cease functioning and the budget no longer be appropriated ", effectively breaking the promises made in 2000 if ' cease functioning ' is considered to be synonymous with ' abolishing '.

While sharing an office at Brookhaven National Laboratory, in 1954, Chen Ning Yang and Mills proposed a tensor equation for what are now called Yang-Mills fields.

At the same time, in his " Four Noes and One Without " policy, Chen promised not to abolish formally the Council or the Guidelines for National Unification, in order to allay international concern about his possible moves toward declaring independence.

In his lunar new year speech in 2006 President Chen Shui-bian instructed the DPP to begin formal debate on the permanent abolition of the National Unification Council and the guidelines set out therein.

However, A-mei became the subject of considerable political controversy after performing the National Anthem of the Republic of China at the first presidential inauguration of Chen Shui-bian on May 20, 2000.

In the early 1990s, Sisy Chen remained active in Taiwanese society as a member of the UN Minority Group for Asia, the chairperson of the Taiwan Relations Center's office of the UN, and the producer for Italian National Broadcast's Asia Department.

There are over 230 professors and 426 associate professors out of the total of 1066 faculty members, among which honorary Professor GaoKun, one of the 2009's Nobel Prize winners of physics, Professor Ye Peida, senior academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences ( CAS ), Professor Zhou Jiongpan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering ( CAE ), Professor Chen Junliang, academician of both CAS and CAE and Professor Xu Daxiong, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kirgizstan are in the forefront of the outstanding professors.

In the late 1970s, a resurgence of interest occurred in Taiwan, largely due to the efforts of Lydia Chen ( Chen Hsia-Sheng 陳夏盛 ) of the National Palace Museum who founded the Chinese Knotting Promotion Center.

The station's design was assigned to the Ministry of Railway Institute's third department ( now the Third Railway Survey and Design Institute Group Co. Ltd ) with the station house building chaired by then renowned architects Yang Tingbao ( 杨廷宝 ) and Chen Deng-Ao ( 陈登鏊 ), the National Building and Industry Department and the Nanjing Institute of Architectural Design were to cooperate in the design tasks.

Shortly after the bill was passed, the ROC President Chen Shui-bian called for a National Security meeting in Taipei to discuss the issue.

As part of the Four Noes and One Without pledge, President Chen Shui-bian had promised not to formally abolish the Guidelines for National Unification or the National Unification Council despite his party's supportive stance on Taiwan independence.
