William Preece, a British scientist took back with him several of the Edison Effect bulbs, and presented a paper on them in 1885, where he referred to thermionic emission as the " Edison Effect.

First described in conceptual terms by U. S. inventor Thomas Edison in 1888, it was largely developed by his employee William Kennedy Laurie Dickson between 1889 and 1892.

The Edison facility was very close by, and the lecture was possibly attended by both Edison and his company's official photographer, William Dickson.
