Finale episode " Restless " delves into the characters ' psyches through dream sequences ; Xander's dream involves his erotic attraction to Buffy's mom ( Kristine Sutherland ), Willow and her girlfriend Tara ( Amber Benson ), his fear of his abusive father, and features a re-enactment of 1979 film Apocalypse Now.

Xander's doubts about his future with Anya are expressed when he summons the all-singing demon Sweet ( Hinton Battle ), in the musical episode " Once More With Feeling ".

In the episode " Dirty Girls ", Xander's left eye is gouged out by the evil preacher Caleb ( Nathan Fillion ), and he begins wearing an eyepatch.

The episode brings to light how the basis for heroism rests in the subconscious, and also how as the two battles increasingly merge, his friends cannot hope to save the world and save others unless Xander's battle with the Self is also won.

Various episodes highlight Xander's intense bravery ; for example, he faces down evil Angelus ( Boreanaz ) at Buffy's hospital door in the episode " Killed by Death ", and he offers his life in place of Willow's in " Inca Mummy Girl ".

In the DVD commentary for the episode " Dirty Girls ", writer Drew Goddard mentions there was talk of killing off Xander towards the end of Season Seven and having the First Evil assume Xander's appearance when conversing with Buffy for the remainder of the season.

* This episode marked the first of Xander's three break-ups throughout the series, each of which would be followed by a botched attempt at vengeance: in this episode, Xander's awry love spell ; in The Wish, Cordelia's ill-fated plea to vengeance demon Anyanka ; and in Entropy, Anya's unsuccessful attempts to enact her own vengeance.

" In the episode " Dirty Girls ," Caleb tells Xander that he sees everything before putting his thumb in Xander's eye.

Here, Xander's feelings of inadequacy develop into the A-story while a stereotypical epic episode of Buffy and the others saving the world is pushed to the background to become the B.

* Buffy comments that Xander's eye twitches every time she says Faiths name, foreshadowing the episode Dirty Girls in which Faith returns and Xander gets his eye poked out.

She saves Buffy by removing the bullet from her chest, but later commandeers a tractor trailer, making it slam into Xander's car while he and Buffy are inside protecting Jonathan and Andrew, the other two members of the Trio.

Throughout the series, Xander's family are seen to be highly dysfunctional and composed of alcoholics.

They are mentored by Rupert Giles ( Anthony Stewart Head ), Buffy's " Watcher ", and are eventually joined by Xander's new girlfriend Anya Jenkins ( Emma Caulfield ), who was a vengeance demon until her powers were taken away.

Xander's actions are very clearly directed toward protecting Anya and punishing Spike for harming her, and likewise, within a matter of moments Anya's doubts about how Xander feels about her have disappeared and she becomes instantly affectionate towards him again.

Xander's dream features mismatches between sound and image: characters are sometimes shown not speaking even as their voices are heard.

Scholar Jess Battis writes that in contrast to the way family members are portrayed throughout the series as absent ( Willow's ), chaotic ( Xander's ), or highly disruptive ( Anya's ), Joyce straddles these extremes.

Back in Xander's basement apartment, Spike is eager for another brawl and tries to persuade Willow and Xander to go out for some more demon-hunting rather than watching television, but they are too disturbed and frightened by his overly-excited attitude to do so.

In the scene that follows, Anya, Willow, and Buffy are watching Roadrunner cartoons in Xander's basement.

" His lie will not be alluded to until Season 7's " Selfless ", when, during an argument over Anya, the subject of Xander's lie is briefly raised.

Once outside, Xander expresses jealousy about the flirting, while Cordelia retorts with jealousy about Xander's loyalty to Buffy.

However, Xander's unique position as both outside of and within the main group enhances his insight into the other characters, especially as the series continues ; in Season Eight, he is Buffy's unofficial " Watcher ".

In his dream, Xander goes to use the bathroom, and is emasculated and infantilized by Buffy asking him if he needs any help: this scene shows Xander's " sense of insecurity and powerlessness ".

Snyder makes one more appearance in the role of Colonel Kurtz in Xander's Apocalypse Now-themed dream in the season four finale " Restless ".

Cordelia returns to school only to be rejected by Harmony and her former clique, taunted as " Xander's castoff ".
