Most commuter ( or suburban ) trains are built to main line rail standards, differing from light rail or rapid transit ( metro rail ) systems by:

* Cadillac ( Montreal Metro ), a metro station on the green line in Montreal

There are also plans for a light rail system operating between Amman and Zarqa and a funicular and metro line in Amman.

An international mainline railway the Gulf Railway and a four line metro network is proposed.

Excluding the Shanghai Maglev line and the two light metro lines, the Shanghai Metro has of heavy rail rapid transit routes, compared to the London Underground's.

These sections of railway are extensions of suburban main line services and are not a completely segregated true metro system.

* A new metro line to extend from Epping to Castle Hill, and possibly later to the new development underway between St James and Rouse Hill known as the North West Metro.

* A metro railway line that would start at St James, continue through to the CBD and onwards to Maroubra.

* December 30 – The first Japanese commuter metro line, the Ginza Line in Tokyo, opens.

Another project, already underway, is the Cagliari metro: the first line has already started running from Piazza Repubblica to the Cagliari suburb of Monserrato, and another will soon connect the University campus ; works for other lines to all the city suburbs and the airport are planned.

It could be called a metro but isn't since there is a separate system called Ankara Metro.

Several major cities have metro systems ; the Caracas Metro has been operating since 1983.
