One of the earliest was Johann Albrecht Bengel ( 1687 – 1752 ), who in 1734 produced an edition of the Greek New Testament.

Here he studied for a time under Ernst Bengel, grandson of the eminent New Testament critic, Johann Albrecht Bengel, and at this early stage in his career he seems to have been under the influence of the old Tübingen school.

In textual criticism Semler pursued further the principle of classifying manuscripts in families, adopted by Richard Simon and Johann Albrecht Bengel.

Although they were not premillennial, the English theologian Daniel Whitby ( 1688 – 1726 ), the German Johann Albrecht Bengel ( 1687 – 1752 ), and the American Jonathan Edwards ( 1703 – 58 ) “ fueled millennial ideas with new influence in the nineteenth century .” It was authors such as these who concluded that the decline of the Roman Catholic Church would make way for the conversion and restoration of the nation of Israel.

Johann Albrecht Bengel ( 24 June 1687, Winnenden – 2 November 1752, Stuttgart ), was a Lutheran pietist clergyman and Greek-language scholar known for his edition of the Greek New Testament and his commentaries on it.

Bengel was born at Winnenden in Württemberg.

In 1703 Bengel left Stuttgart and entered the University of Tübingen as a student at the Tübinger Stift, where, in his spare time, he devoted himself especially to the works of Aristotle and Spinoza, and, in theology, to those of Philipp Spener, Johann Arndt and August Francke.

After acquiring his degree, Bengel devoted himself to theology.

In 1707 Bengel entered the ministry and was appointed to the parochial charge of Metzingen-unter-Urach.

Bengel exerted himself on the side of the members of the consistory.

Bengel carried on an 18-year-long controversy with Nicolaus Ludwig, Count von Zinzendorf, leader of the Moravian Brethren from Herrnhut in Saxony.
