Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company ( TSMC ) and United Microelectronics Corporation ( UMC ) are the two largest contract chipmakers in the world, while MediaTek is the fourth-largest fabless supplier globally.

On June 28, 2000, National Semiconductor and TSMC Taiwan signed an agreement that would allow transfer of advanced fabrication technologies from TSMC to the National Semiconductor fabrication plant in South Portland, Maine.

The manufacturing equipment was sold to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Ltd. ( TSMC ) and the property and associated land to Highbridge Business Park Limited.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Limited or TSMC (, ) is the world's largest dedicated independent semiconductor foundry, with its headquarters and main operations located in the Hsinchu Science Park in Hsinchu, Taiwan.

TSMC announced plans to invest US $ 9. 4 billion to build its third 12-inch ( 300 mm ) wafer fabrication facility in Central Taiwan Science Park ( Fab 15 ), which will use advanced 40 and 20-nanometer technologies.

Dr. Tsai's work with TSMC began in 1989 and includes many distinguished roles: vice president responsible for operation of Fabs 3 and 4 ; senior director of Fab 3 responsible for design, construction, start-up, volume production and fab operation ; and finally as director of Fab 2, Module A, responsible for operation, profit and loss, and process development.

However, with the government's focus on development of expertise with high technology, along with marketing and management knowledge to establish its own industries, companies such as TSMC and UMC were established.

Various fabless high-tech companies such as Applied Micro Circuits Corporation, Qualcomm, Altera, Broadcom, Conexant, Marvell, NVIDIA, and VIA are customers of TSMC.

Major chipmakers such as Intel, Globalfoundries, IBM, NEC, TSMC, Samsung, and Micron Technology, have their own large maskmaking facilities or joint ventures with the abovementioned companies.

The 90 nm process refers to the level of CMOS process technology that was reached in the 2002 – 2003 timeframe, by most leading semiconductor companies, like Intel, AMD, Infineon, Texas Instruments, IBM, and TSMC.

The other major semiconductor foundries include TSMC and UMC, Taiwanese-based companies, which are primarily Chartered's main competitors.

Several companies, including IBM, Intel and TSMC, have prepared for the continued use of current lithography, using double patterning, for the 22 nm and 16 nm nodes, and extending double patterning beyond 11 nm.

Key provisions of the settlement include a mutual release of all claims that were or could have been brought in the pending lawsuits ; termination of SMIC's obligation to make remaining payments under the prior settlement agreement between the parties ( approximately US $ 40 million ); payment to TSMC of an aggregate of US $ 200 million ; and a grant to TSMC of approximately 8 % of SMIC's issued share capital and a warrant which would allow TSMC to obtain total ownership of approximately 10 % of SMIC's issued share capital.

This alliance of STMicroelectronics, TSMC, NXP Semiconductors ( formerly Philips semiconductor ) and Freescale ( formerly Motorola semiconductor ) partnered in 2002 to develop the facility and to work together on process development.

As a fabless semiconductor company, VIA conducts research and development of its chipsets in-house, then subcontracts the actual ( silicon ) manufacturing to third-party merchant foundries, such as TSMC.
