* 1953 – The British Natural History Museum announces that the " Piltdown Man " skull, initially believed to be one of the most important fossilized hominid skulls ever found, is a hoax.

The first hominid skull in Olduvai Gorge was discovered by Mary Leakey in 1959, and named Zinj or Nutcracker Man, the first example of Paranthropus boisei, and is thought to be over 1. 8 million years old.

* Michel Brunet, a paleontologist at the University of Poitiers, France, announced in the journal Nature that a 7-million-year-old skull found in the desert of Chad is the earliest hominid fossil ever found.

Discoveries have included the earliest hominid skull in Europe.

* First fossil skull fragments of the hominid ' Toumaï ' ( Sahelanthropus tchadensis ; 7 million years BP ) found by a team led by Michel Brunet in Chad.

The skull is from an extremely robust individual, and has the comparatively largest brow-ridges of any known hominid remains.

The skull has cavities in ten of the upper teeth and is considered the oldest occurrence of cavities for a hominid.
