The planter aristocracy has appeared in literature at least since John Pendleton Kennedy published Swallow-Barn in 1832 and in his genial portrait of Frank Meriwether presiding over his plantation dominion initiated the most persistent tradition of Southern literature.

In painting, there was only a portrait of Hieronymus Holtzschuher, a Madonna and Child ( 1526 ), Salvator Mundi ( 1526 ), and two panels showing St. John with St. Peter in background and St. Paul with St. Mark in the background.

In 1834, he received his first instruction in art in classes of John Rubens Smith, a portrait painter in Philadelphia.

Another criticism of image veneration is found in the non-canonical 2nd-century Acts of John ( generally considered a gnostic work ), in which the Apostle John discovers that one of his followers has had a portrait made of him, and is venerating it:

Joseph Severn ( 7 December 1793 – 3 August 1879 ) was an English portrait and subject painter and a personal friend of the famous English poet John Keats.

Severn is best known for his many portraits of Keats, the most famous being the miniature portrait in the National Gallery ( 1819 ), the pen-and-ink sketch, Keats on his Deathbed ( 1821 ), and the oil painting of the poet reading, John Keats at Wentworth Place ( 1821 – 23 ).

He had his portrait painted by John Syme, who clothed the naturalist in frontier clothes.

Her portrait of messianic ( self -) sacrifices of these figures make for entertaining speculation, but they have not been taken seriously as history even by her staunchest supporters, though they have been used in novels ( e. g. Katherine Kurtz's Lammas Night, Philip Lindsay's The Devil and King John ).

Her portrait of The Reverend Matthew Blackburne Grier was particularly well-received, as was Sita and Sarita, a portrait of her cousin Charles W. Leavitt's wife Sarah ( Allibone ) Leavitt in white, with a small black cat perched on her shoulder, both gazing out mysteriously.

Examples are Ashenden or: the British Agent ( 1928 ) by W. Somerset Maugham, about counter-revolutionary British espionage against Bolshevik Russia, and The Mystery of Tunnel 51 ( 1928 ) by Alexander Wilson whose novels conveyed an uncanny portrait of the first head of the Secret Intelligence Service, Mansfield Smith-Cumming, the original ' C '.

He reportedly shared with a surprised George H. W. Bush, at the time the Director of the CIA, his fear that some of the portraits in 10 Downing Street ( specifically including Gladstone's portrait in the Cabinet Room ) concealed listening devices being used to bug his discussions.

Beaglehole ’ s alma mater, the Victoria University of Wellington, named its archival collections after him, in the reading room of which is displayed his portrait, by W. A.

In 1921, American oil executive W. H. McFadden commissioned Dunton to paint a full-length portrait of big-game hunter Ben Lilly.

Alistair Cooke divorced Ruth in 1944, and married Jane White Hawkes, a portrait painter and the widow of neurologist A. Whitfield Hawkes, the son of Albert W. Hawkes, on 30 April 1946.

Soane included many members of the Royal Academy as friends including J. M. W. Turner, who was professor of drawing at the Royal Academy, with whom he spent the Christmas after his wife's death as well as owning three works by the artist ; John Flaxman was an old friend, he was professor of sculpture at the Royal Academy and Soane also acquired several plastercasts of Flaxman's work for his museum ; Thomas Banks again Soane owned sculptures by him ; Thomas Lawrence who painted Soane's portrait ; despite falling out with his old master, George Dance the Younger, they were firm friends after his death Soane purchased Dance's drawings ; after the death of his other teacher Henry Holland, Soane tried to buy his drawings and papers, but found they had been destroyed, but did purchase some of his antique sculptures ; despite being rivals Soane got on with fellow architect John Nash, they often dined together.

The second version of the medal, in silver and bronze, was engraved by W. Wyon of the Royal Mint-with De la Bache's portrait on one side, and the plantation on the other-the plantation being replaced with crossed hammers for the School of Mines.

Frederic Remington was related by family bloodlines to Indian portrait artist George Catlin and cowboy sculptor Earl W. Bascom.

In 1956, a small tintype portrait purportedly of Crazy Horse was published by J. W. Vaughn in his book With Crook at the Rosebud.

His portrait of W. M. Ladbrooke, Able Seaman, Merchant Navy ( National Maritime Museum, London ), painted following a visit to the Merchant Navy convalescent home in Limpsfield, Surrey around 1943, embodies sympathy for the heroic yet vulnerable sailor.
