Saint Adalbert, Czech: ;, ( c. 956 – April 23, 997 ), Czech Roman Catholic saint, a Bishop of Prague and a missionary, was martyred in his efforts to convert the Baltic Prussians.

Adalbert ( Vojtěch ) was born into a noble Czech family of Prince Slavník and his wife Střezislava in Libice nad Cidlinou, Bohemia.

The Calendar of Saints states that her first husband was poisoned by the holder of real power, his successor, Berengar of Ivrea, who attempted to cement his political power by forcing her to marry his son, Adalbert ; when she refused and fled, she was tracked down and imprisoned for four months at Como.

In 1066 or 1067 he was invited by archbishop Adalbert of Hamburg to join the Church of Bremen.

At the age of six he was sent to be educated in Magdeburg, seat of Adalbert of Magdeburg, the teacher and namesake of Saint Adalbert.

The Archbishopric of Magdeburg was founded in 968 at the synod of Ravenna ; Adalbert of Magdeburg was consecrated as its first archbishop.

Thietmar of Merseburg says that the first archbishop of Magdeburg, Saint Adalbert of Magdeburg, before being promoted to this high rank, was sent by Emperor Otto to the country of the Rus ' ( Rusciae ) as a simple bishop but was expelled by pagan allies of Svyatoslav I.

The German bishops, again led by Adalbert of Mainz, excommunicated Conrad, an act that was confirmed by Honorius in a synod held in Rome at Easter ( 22 April 1128 ).

Sergius was then forcibly exiled by Lambert, fleeing to his see at Caere, where he placed himself under the protection of Adalbert II, Margrave of Tuscany.

However, on the one occasion that Sergius agreed to crown Berengar in around 906, Berengar was prevented from reaching Rome by the forces of Alberic I of Spoleto and Adalbert II of Tuscany, both of whom had been supporters of Sergius, but were unhappy with his decision to support Berengar.

A painter and goldsmith, of his three paintings known to survive, one was for centuries erroneously attributed to Tintoretto ; and from his own, personal workshop came the main part of the famous silver coffin of St. Adalbert of Prague at the Cathedral in Gniezno.

According to Carsten Diercks, camera operator and filmmaker at West-German Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk ( NWDR ) during the 1950s, pilottone was invented at the NWDR studio in Hamburg-Lokstedt, West Germany by NWDR technical engineer Adalbert Lohmann and his assistant Udo Stepputat in the early 1950s for single-camera 16mm TV news gathering and documentaries.

Together with Adalbert Durrer and Remigio Ratti, he was one of three official candidates proposed by the CVP for the seat of retiring Councillor Flavio Cotti.

In addition, under the May Laws of 1873 administered by Adalbert Falk, the state began to supervise the education of clergy closely, created a secular court for cases involving the clergy, and required notification of all clergy employment.

Lionel Adalbert Bagration Felix Kieseritzky ( January 1, 1806 – May 18, 1853 ) was a 19th-century chess master, famous primarily for a game he lost against Adolf Anderssen, which because of its brilliance was named " The Immortal Game ".

In the beginning he mostly helped his father but from 1708 he worked independently and two years later, in the age of 22, he acquired a reputation for his work on several statues on the Charles Bridge in Prague ( the statuary of St. Adalbert, the statue of St. Gaetano, the sculpture group of Francis Borgia, the statues of St. Ignatius and Francis Xaverius, statuary of Saints John of Matha, Felix of Valois and Ivo including the famous statue of Turk, etc.

Together with Adalbert Krüger and Eduard Schönfeld, Argelander was responsible for the star catalogue known as the Bonner Durchmusterung, published between 1852 and 1859, which gave the positions and brightness of more than 324, 000 stars, although it did not cover much of the southern half of the sky.

Godfrey, however, continued to fight for all Lorraine and Adalbert died in battle against him at Thuin on 11 November 1048.

By this, he reinitiated the close alliance with the Holy Roman Emperors which his forefathers had had for over a century from the appointment of Adalbert until the war between his brother and Frederick, which had ruptured that long friendship.

He also wrote a libretto ( originally for composer Adalbert Gyrowetz ) that Verdi used for his early comedy Un giorno di regno.

Przemysł also acquired the settlement of St. Gotard from the bishopric, in exchange for that of St. Adalbert, with the intention of founding a town there.

He showed genuine episcopal generosity in the liberal manner with which he met the views of the Emperor Otto II regarding the intended reduction in size of his diocese for the benefit of the new Diocese of Prague ( 975 ), to which Saint Adalbert was appointed first bishop.

In AD 1000, during his pilgrimage to the tomb of Saint Adalbert in Gniezno, the capital of Poland until about 1040, Emperor Otto III officially recognized Duke Bolesław I the Brave as King of Poland ( see Congress of Gniezno ), crowning him and presenting him with a replica of the Holy Lance, also known as Saint Maurice's Spear.
