Another source of inspiration were Adriaen van Ostade and Isaac van Ostade, painters of rural scenes, who lived in Haarlem.

At a young age Brouwer, probably born as Adriaen de Brauwer in Oudenaarde, moved perhaps via Antwerp to Haarlem, where he became a student of Frans Hals alongside Adriaen van Ostade.

Adriaen van Ostade ( baptized as Adriaen Jansz Hendricx December 10, 1610 – buried May 2, 1685 ) was a Dutch Golden Age painter of genre works.

Although Adriaen and his brother Isaack were born in Haarlem, they adopted the name " van Ostade " as painters.
