Ahab (; ; ) was king of Israel and the son and successor of Omri according to the Hebrew Bible.

Ahab married Jezebel, the daughter of the King of Tyre, and the alliance was doubtless the means of procuring political support.

1 Kings chapters 16 – 22 tells the story of Ahab and Jezebel, and indicates that Jezebel was a bad influence on Ahab.

The Battle of Qarqar is mentioned in extra-biblical records, and was perhaps at Apamea where Shalmaneser III of Assyria fought a great confederation of princes from Cilicia, Northern Syria, Israel, Ammon, and the tribes of the Syrian desert ( 853 BC ), including Ahab ( A-ha-ab-bu < sup > mat </ sup >) ( Adad -' idri ).

During this battle Ahab disguised himself, but was mortally wounded by an unaimed arrow ( ch.

Israelites of course abstained from pork, but Ahab was married to a Phoenician / Tyrian princess Jezebel, who was one of the most " powerful and notorious women of monarchic times " yet who died of a similarly seemingly random death like her husband, and his capital of Samaria was said to follow Canaanite gods.

Ahab was succeeded by his sons, Ahaziah and Jehoram.

Ahab himself was not a wicked person, but he was easily influenced by his wife, and this led to his destruction.

Arabic: إلياس, Ilyās ), was a famous prophet and a wonder-worker in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of Ahab ( 9th century BC ), according to the Books of Kings.

Elijah then goes beyond the prophecy he was given and tells Ahab that his entire kingdom will reject his authority ; that Jezebel will be eaten by dogs within Jezreel ; and that his family will be consumed by dogs as well ( if they die in a city ) or by birds ( if they die in the country ).

Omri's rule over Israel was secure enough that he could bequeath his kingdom to Ahab, thus beginning a new dynasty ( sometimes called the Omrides ), and his descendants not only ruled over the kingdom of Israel for the next forty years, but also briefly over Judah.

Most threatening, however, was the ascendancy of Assyria, which was beginning to expand westward from Mesopotamia: the Battle of Qarqar ( 853 BC ), which pitted Shalmaneser III of Assyria against a coalition of local kings, including Ahab, was the first clash between Assyria and Israel.

In Chapter 91 of Moby Dick, Stubb, one of the mates of the Pequod ( captained by Ahab ), cons the captain of a French whaler ( Rose-bud ) into abandoning the corpse of a sperm whale found floating in the sea.

After Elijah's confrontation with Ahab, God tells him to flee out of Israel, to a hiding place by the brook Cherith, east of the Jordan, where he will be fed by ravens.

This account frequently invokes the slogan of " avenging the blood of Naboth " (, 25, 26 ), whose vineyard Jehoram's father Ahab had taken by force (); this fact suggests that perhaps the burden of making the northern kingdom a regional power had grown too heavy for its citizens, and Jehoram's defeat at Ramoth-Gilead gave them an opportunity to throw this burden off.

Moreover, having lived with two such godless persons as Ahab and Jezebel without learning to act as they did, he seemed the most suitable person to prophesy against Esau ( Edom ), who, having been brought up by two pious persons, Isaac and Rebekah, had not learned to imitate their good deeds.

On the other hand, peace with Sidon also resulted in the penetration of Phoenician religious ideas into the kingdom and led to a kulturkampf between traditionalists ( as personified by the prophet Elijah and his followers ) and the aristocracy ( as personified by Omri's son and heir Ahab and his consort Jezebel ).

Remains of the royal palace built by Omri and Ahab during the Israelite period were discovered along with buildings constructed by the Babylonian, Greeks and Romans.

When Ahab hears this he repents to such a degree that God relents in punishing Ahab but will punish Jezebel and their son — Ahaziah.

Elijah continues now from Ahab to an encounter with Ahaziah.

Ahab still consulted Yahweh's prophets and cherished Yahweh's protection when he named his sons Ahaziah (" Yahweh holds ") and Jehoram (" Yahweh is high.

From being wounded by an arrow to his burial in Jerusalem, the story resembles perhaps too closely stories from I and II Kings about Kings Ahab of Israel and Ahaziah of Judah, events which occurred at least two centuries before Josiah's death.

Athaliah is usually considered the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel of Israel ( see discussion below ); her marriage to Jehoram sealed a treaty between Israel and Judah.

The fourth encounter is with Micaiah, the prophet who, when asked for advice on a military campaign, first assures Ahab he will be successful and ultimately gives Ahab a glimpse into God's plan for Ahab to die in battle ( 1 Kings 22 ).

He warns Ahab that there will be years of catastrophic drought so severe that not even dew will fall, because Ahab and his queen stand at the end of a line of kings of Israel who are said to have " done evil in the sight of the Lord.

While on his way, Elijah meets Obadiah, the head of Ahab's household, who had hidden a hundred prophets of the God of Israel when Ahab and Jezebel had been killing them.

It has also been suggested that the Ba ‘ al of Tyre, Melqart " king of the city " ( who was probably the Ba ‘ al whose worship was furthered by Ahab and his house ) was this supposed god Moloch and that Melqart / Moloch was also Milcom the god of the Ammonites and identical to other gods whose names contain mlk.
