" When he saw Al Jolson singing in The Jazz Singer in 1927, considered the first talkie, Capra recalled his reaction:

Lewis tried his hand at releasing solo music in the 1950s, having a chart hit with the song " Rock-a-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody " ( a song largely associated with Al Jolson and later re-popularized by Judy Garland ) as well as the song, " It All Depends on You " in 1958.

The Jazz Singer, released in 1927 by Warner Brothers, was not only the first film with synchronized dialogue, but the first feature film that was also a musical, featuring Al Jolson singing " Dirty Hands, Dirty Face ;" " Toot, Toot, Tootsie ", " Blue Skies " and " My Mammy ".

In 1952 Lee played opposite Danny Thomas in a remake of the early Al Jolson film, The Jazz Singer.

As a result of the financial problems the studio was having, Warner Bros. took the next step and released The Jazz Singer starring Al Jolson.

The network became the home of many popular musical and comedy stars, among them Jack Benny, (" Your Canada Dry Humorist "), Al Jolson, George Burns & Gracie Allen, and Kate Smith, whom Paley personally selected for his family's La Palina Hour because she was not the type of woman to provoke jealousy in American wives.

In the same year, the Cotton Club Orchestra appeared on stage for several months in Florenz Ziegfeld's Show Girl, along with vaudeville stars Jimmy Durante, Eddie Foy, Jr., Al Jolson, Ruby Keeler, and with music and lyrics by George Gershwin and Gus Kahn.

Other film work includes the scores to The Phantom President ( 1932 ), starring George M. Cohan, Hallelujah, I'm a Bum ( 1933 ), starring Al Jolson, and, in a quick return after having left Hollywood, Mississippi ( 1935 ), starring Bing Crosby and W. C. Fields.

It became identified with her, and soon worked its way back to New York where Al Jolson also began to perform it.

The song has been recorded by many artists, including The Andrews Sisters, Louis Armstrong, Ray Charles, Johnnie Ray, Bee Gees, Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, George Formby, Al Jolson, Liberace, Billy Murray, Liza Minnelli, Sid Phillips, Bessie Smith and Julie Andrews.

When the movie's star, Al Jolson, sings, however, the film shifts to sound recorded on the set, including both his musical performances and two scenes with ad-libbed speech — one of Jolson's character, Jakie Rabinowitz ( Jack Robin ), addressing a cabaret audience ; the other an exchange between him and his mother.

In September, the studio released another Al Jolson part-talking picture, The Singing Fool, which more than doubled The Jazz Singers earnings record for a Warners movie.

Tex Avery, for whom Clampett worked as an animator in the mid-1930s, borrowed strongly from this cartoon for his 1948 MGM cartoons Half-Pint Pygmy ( in which the characters, George and Junior, travel to Africa in search of the world's smallest pygmy, only to discover that he has an uncle who's even smaller ) and The Cat That Hated People ( where the cat travels to the moon and encounters an array of characters similar to those in Clampett's Wackyland, e. g., a pair of gloves and lips that keep saying " Mammy, mammy ", just like the Al Jolson duck in Porky in Wackyland ).

In 1928, the song " Golden Gate ", sung by Al Jolson, included the refrain: " Oh, Golden Gate, I'm comin ' to ya / Golden Gate, sing Hallelujah / I'll live in the sun, love in the moon / Where every month is June.
