Albert Schweitzer, OM ( 14 January 1875 – 4 September 1965 ) was a German and then French theologian, organist, philosopher, physician, and medical missionary.

He received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his philosophy of " Reverence for Life ", expressed in many ways, but most famously in founding and sustaining the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambaréné, now in Gabon, west central Africa ( then French Equatorial Africa ).

Henry, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, then took command of the troops of the league, and after Albert had been placed under the imperial ban in December 1553 he was defeated by Duke Henry, and compelled to flee to France.

Albert, and his descendants of the House of Ascania, then made considerable progress in Christianizing and Germanizing the lands.

He then studied medicine in Berlin and Würzburg, particularly with Albert von Kölliker, Franz Leydig, Rudolf Virchow ( with whom he later worked briefly as assistant ), and with anatomist-physiologist Johannes Peter Müller ( 1801 – 1858 ).

When the Austro-Prussian War broke out in 1866, Albert then Crown Prince ( German: Kronprinz ), took up the command of the Saxon forces opposing the Prussian Army of Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia.

Albert illegally took control of some imperial fiefs and then asked to marry Kunigunde ( who lived in Innsbruck, far from her father ), offering to give her the fiefs as a dowry.
