Kansas City Pioneer Square monument in Westport features Pony Express founder Alexander Majors, Westport / Kansas City founder John Calvin McCoy and Mountainman Jim Bridger who owned Chouteau's Store.

This firm was founded by William H. Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B. Waddell all of whom were notable in the freighting business.

Alexander Majors

William Russell, Alexander Majors and William Waddell were the three founders of the Pony Express and were already in the freighting business in the late 1850s with more than 4, 000 men, 3, 500 wagons and some 40, 000 oxen.

In 1855 they took on a new partner, Alexander Majors, and founded the company of Russell, Majors & Waddell.

Alexander Majors, one of the founders of the Pony Express, had acquired more than 400 horses for the project.

Additionally, numerous former players with the Negro Leagues played in the Senior Intercounty Baseball League after the Negro Leagues gradually folded after Jackie Robinson broke the " colour barrier " in 1947, including pitcher Ted Alexander of the Kansas City Monarchs and the Homestead Grays ( 1950-51 London Majors ); Wilmer Fields ( Brantford Red Sox ); Jimmy Wilkes ( retired jersey # 5 for the Brantford Red Sox, later became a City league umpire after a decade with Brantford ); Gentry ( Geep ) Jessup ( Galt Terriers ); Larry Cunningham ( Galt Terriers, Hamilton Cardinals ); Ed Steele ( Galt ) and Shanty Clifford ( Galt and Brantford ); Luther Clifford ; Max Manning ; Lester Lockett ; Bob Thurman and Stanley Glenn ( St. Thomas Elgins ); all made numerous appearances at Labatt Park in the 1950s.

In 1950, pitcher Ted Alexander joined the Majors.

Alexander left the Majors part way through the 1951 season, during which the Majors won the Intercounty title with star pitchers, Bill and Stan Slack.

It was formed by William Russell, Alexander Majors and William Waddell, as a freighting company supplying goods to the western United States.

Yet, William Hepburn Russell, Alexander Majors, and William B. Waddell are more often credited as the founders, owners, and operators of the Pony Express.
