The county was named by Alexander Doniphan to honor John Caldwell, who participated in the George Rogers Clark Native American Campaign of 1786 and was the second Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky.
It is named for the U. S. cavalry commander Colonel Alexander W. Doniphan ( 1808 – 1887 ) of Liberty, Missouri, who played an important part in the Mexican-American War.
He was joined three years later by colleague Alexander William Doniphan.
