Psychoanalysis has expanded, been criticized and developed in different directions, mostly by some of Freud's former students, such as Alfred Adler and Carl Gustav Jung, Wilhelm Reich and later by neo-Freudians such as Erich Fromm, Karen Horney, Harry Stack Sullivan and Jacques Lacan.

One of Sigmund Freud's earlier associates, Alfred Adler, did agree with Freud that early childhood experiences are important to development, and believed birth order may influence personality development.

Alfred Adler suggested that dreams are often emotional preparations for solving problems, intoxicating an individual away from common sense toward private logic.

Alfred Adler had theorized about an ' aggressive drive ' in 1908.

Alfred W. Adler ( February 7, 1870 – May 28, 1937 ) was an Austrian medical doctor, psychotherapist, and founder of the school of individual psychology.

Alfred Adler was born at Mariahilfer Straße 208 in Rudolfsheim, a place near Vienna at the time but today part of Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, the 15th district of Vienna.

Some schools of psychology, notably that associated with Alfred Adler, place power dynamics at the core of their theory ( where orthodox Freudians might place sexuality ).

Immanuel Kant ( 1724 – 1804 ), Rudolf Steiner ( 1861 – 1925 ), Alfred Adler ( 1879 – 1937 ), Erich Adickes ( 1866 – 1925 ), Eduard Spranger ( 1914 ), Ernst Kretschmer ( 1920 ), and Erich Fromm ( 1947 ) all theorized on the four temperaments ( with different names ) and greatly shaped our modern theories of temperament.

His early development was influenced by his contacts with Sigmund Freud and Alfred Adler, although he would later diverge from their teachings.

Of psychologists, the writings of Karen Horney, Alfred Adler, Erich Fromm and Harry Stack Sullivan would arguably be some of the greatest influences in Ellis's thinking and played a role in shaping his psychological models.
