During the 1990s, the Allman Brothers reunited and became a strong touring and recording presence again, and the jam band scene revived interest in extended improvised music.

Like Alan Wilson, Duane Allman played a key role in bringing slide guitar into rock music, through his work with The Allman Brothers Band, specifically on the 1971 live album At Fillmore East and with Derek and the Dominos ' Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs album.

Beginning in the late 1960s, Allman used an empty glass Coricidin medicine bottle, which he wore over his ring finger as a slide.

Such bottles eventually went out of production in the early 1980s, although replicas have been produced since 1985, including a copy of Allman's slide used by another Allman Brothers member, Derek Trucks, which was made of Dunlop Pyrex, giving the same sound as the glass slide, without the danger of shattering.

The band was formed in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1969 by brothers Duane Allman ( slide guitar and lead guitar ) and Gregg Allman ( vocals, organ, songwriting ), plus Dickey Betts ( lead guitar, vocals, songwriting ), Berry Oakley ( bass guitar ), Butch Trucks ( drums ), and Jai Johanny " Jaimoe " Johanson ( drums ).

The recording consisted of six guitar tracks: a rhythm track by Clapton, three tracks of harmonies played by Clapton against the main riff, a track of slide guitar by Allman, and one track with both Allman and Clapton playing duplicate solos.

" Layla's " second movement was recorded roughly a week after the first, with Gordon playing his piano part, Clapton playing acoustic guitar and slide guitar, and Allman playing electric and bottleneck slide guitar.

By placing his slide at points beyond the end of the fretboard, Allman was able to play notes at a higher pitch than could be played with standard technique.

The song ends with Allman playing his signature high-pitched " bird call " on his slide guitar.

Warren Haynes ( Allman Brothers Band ) adds slide guitar on the " Buzzards of Green Hill " and Fish Fisher ( Fishbone drummer ) guests on " Whamola.

The founders of Southern rock are usually thought to be the Allman Brothers Band, who developed a distinctive sound, largely derived from blues rock, but incorporating elements of boogie, soul, and country ; combining hard rock instrumentation and rhythms with accented vocals and Duane Allman's slide guitar.

They have also collaborated with a number of other artists: James Hetfield of Metallica contributed vocals to the song " Man or Ash " on Wiseblood ; Warren Haynes of the Allman Brothers ' Band and Gov't Mule played slide guitar on " Stare Too Long " on America's Volume Dealer ; and Stanton Moore of Galactic played drums on In the Arms of God.

" Beck's Bolero " also inspired Duane Allman to take up slide guitar, later his signature style.

In St. Louis, Allman's Hour Glass bandmate Paul Hornsby put " Beck's Bolero " on a record player for him, and Allman "' loved that slide part and told me he was going to learn to play it ,' Paul said.

Allman's slide riffs on " Statesboro Blues " have been analyzed and transcribed in guitar magazines many times over and the tones of Allman and Dickey Betts's guitars on the song were hailed by Guitar Player as some of the " 50 Greatest Tones of All Time.

The song is still a staple of The Allman Brothers Band's live shows, now often with Derek Trucks on slide.

Duane and Wilson's version of the song was eventually recorded with Allman on lead guitar.

Eddie Hinton, with whom Duane Allman had played in Muscle Shoals, was considered to play guitar, but Hinton refused in order to join the Muscle Shoals studio band.

Sutherland's pioneering use of reverb and echo, and bluesy, acid-drenched guitar predates such bands as The Allman Brothers Band and ZZ Top.

Though others had earlier used similar techniques, Thin Lizzy are widely recognised as one of the first hard rock bands to employ double lead guitar harmony sound – a technique pioneered by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and Wishbone Ash in the UK, whilst independently in the USA by Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers Band.

This is a good story, but it isn't true ; the band this refers to is " The Almost Brothers ". However, Grinderswitch bassist Joe Dan Petty was the Allman Brothers guitar tech for three decades.

It is also used in rock, by bands and artists such as Canned Heat, The Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, Ry Cooder, Chris Rea, Bonnie Raitt, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Little Feat, Eagles, ZZ Top, Whitesnake and AC / DC.

The event, which was attended by over 600, 000 music fans, also featured the Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers Band.

In January 2007, a tribute album, entitled Endless Highway: The Music of The Band, was released which included contributions by My Morning Jacket, Death Cab for Cutie, Gomez, Guster, Bruce Hornsby, Jack Johnson and ALO, Lee Ann Womack, The Allman Brothers Band, Blues Traveler, Jakob Dylan, and Rosanne Cash, amongst others.

Although a songwriter herself, Baez is generally regarded as an interpreter of other people's work, having recorded songs by The Allman Brothers Band, The Beatles, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Violeta Parra, Woody Guthrie, The Rolling Stones, Pete Seeger, Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Leonard Cohen, and many others.

2008's season featured The New York Philharmonic, the Boston Pops Orchestra, Steely Dan, the Allman Brothers, and sold-out performances by the Jonas Brothers and the last concert of the season, featuring Heart, Journey, and Cheap Trick.

In 1989 The Allman Brothers reunited and returned to the popular consciousness of the American public, spurred by Gregg's recent FM radio success, the release of archival material by PolyGram, and the start of regular appearances on the American summer outdoor amphitheatre circuit.
