Allmusic. com gave the album 3 stars out of 5 and said, " As Green scrapes the lining of his vocal chords through the brash, impassioned tracks, he's singing about more than just ' one tribe, Sepulnation '; he's suggesting something bigger, something worth shouting about and fighting for ".

It was considered the band's strongest work since Treasure by Allmusic reviewer Ned Raggett, who described it as " simply fantastic " and successful in creating " more accessibility ".

Nine Bells ( 1983, India Navigation ) is a conceptual album in which Johnson performs on 9 bells, evenly-spaced and hanging from the ceiling .< REF > Allmusic entry Greg Sandow ( 2003 ) describes Nine Bells, " in which he walked, at a steady rhythmic pace ( and, if I remember correctly, for more than an hour ), among nine suspended burglar alarm bells, systematically exploring all the possible paths among them.
