Albrecht Altdorfer ( c. 1480-February 12, 1538 ) was a German painter, engraver and architect of the Renaissance working in Regensburg.

Altdorfer was born in Regensburg or Altdorf around 1480.

He acquired an interest in art from his father, Ulrich Altdorfer, who was a painter and miniaturist.

Altdorfer was a significant printmaker, with numerous engravings and about ninety-three woodcuts.

Albrecht's brother, Erhard Altdorfer, was also a painter and printmaker in woodcut and engraving, and a pupil of Lucas Cranach the Elder.

The unusual The Battle of Alexander at Issus ( 1528 – 9 ) by Albrecht Altdorfer managed to make one of the most highly regarded Renaissance battle scenes, despite, or perhaps because of, having a vertical format, which was dictated by the planned setting ; it was commissioned as one of a set of eight battle paintings by various artists.

The Wittelsbach collection was begun by Duke Wilhelm IV ( 1508 – 1550 ) who ordered important contemporary painters to create several history paintings, including " The Battle of Alexander at Issus " of Albrecht Altdorfer.

The period around the end of the 15th century saw pure landscape drawings and watercolours from Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Fra Bartolomeo and others, but pure landscape subjects in painting and printmaking, still small, were first produced by Albrecht Altdorfer and others of the German Danube School in the early 16th century.

In this painting, Altdorfer places a large tree that is cut off by the margins at the center of the landscape, making it the central axis and focus within the piece.

Altdorfer seems to exaggerate the measurements of the forest in comparison to the figures: the leaves appear to be larger than the horse, showing the significance of nature and landscape.

As the superintendent of the municipal buildings Altdorfer had overseen the construction of several commercial structures, such as a slaughterhouse and a building for wine storage, possibly even designing them.

During this time, seeking to achieve the vivid lighting effects achieved by such Old Masters as Albrecht Altdorfer, Albrecht Dürer, Matthias Grünewald and Martin Schongauer, he revived and adopted the mischtechnik ( mixed technique ) of painting.

In his later works, Altdorfer moved more towards mannerism and began to depict the human form to the conformity of the Italian model, as well as dominate the picture with frank colors.

He commissioned a series of three monumental woodblock prints – The Triumphal Arch ( 1512 – 18, 192 woodcut panels, 295 cm wide and 357 cm high – approximately 9 ' 8 " by 11 ' 8½ "), and a Triumphal Procession ( 1516 – 18, 137 woodcut panels, 54 m long ) which is led by a Large Triumphal Carriage ( 1522, 8 woodcut panels, 1½ ' high and 8 ' long ), created by artists including Albrecht Dürer, Albrecht Altdorfer and Hans Burgkmair.
