The 350th anniversary of the King James Bible is being celebrated simultaneously with the publishing today of the New Testament, the first part of the New English Bible, undertaken as a new translation of the Scriptures into contemporary English.

One is impressed with the dignity, clarity and beauty of this new translation into contemporary English, and there is no doubt that the meaning of the Bible is more easily understandable to the general reader in contemporary language in the frequently archaic words and phrases of the King James.

Later on, when he became king in 1509, Henry VIII is supposed to have commissioned an English translation of a Life of Henry V so that he could emulate him, on the grounds that he thought that launching a campaign against France would help him to impose himself on the European stage.

The earliest recorded use of this term in English is in Thomas Hacket's 1568 translation of André Thévet's book on France Antarctique ; Thévet himself had referred to the natives as Ameriques.

Alfred lamented in the preface to his translation of Gregory's Pastoral Care that " learning had declined so thoroughly in England that there were very few men on this side of the Humber who could understand their divine services in English, or even translate a single letter from Latin into English: and I suppose that there were not many beyond the Humber either ".

Alfred's first translation was of Pope Gregory the Great's Pastoral Care, which he prefaced with an introduction explaining why he thought it necessary to translate works such as this one from Latin into English.

As Alfred observed in the preface to his English translation of Gregory the Great's Pastoral Care, kings who fail to obey their divine duty to promote learning can expect earthly punishments to befall their people.

While many leading chemists of the time refused to accept Lavoisier's new ideas, demand for Traité élémentaire as a textbook in Edinburgh was sufficient to merit translation into English within about a year of its French publication.

The 1000-page autobiographical manuscript Récoltes et semailles ( 1986 ) is now available on the internet in the French original, and an English translation is underway ( these parts of Récoltes et semailles have already been translated into Russian and published in Moscow ).

King Alfred's ( Alfred the Great ) translation of Orosius ' history of the world uses Angelcynn (- kin ) to describe England and the English people ; Bede used Angelfolc (- folk ); there are also such forms as Engel, Englan ( the people ), Englaland, and Englisc, all showing i-mutation.

The 1929 English translation by Arthur Wesley Wheen gives the title as All Quiet on the Western Front.

In the comic book Asterix and Cleopatra, the author Goscinny inserted a pun about alexandrines: when the Druid Panoramix (" Getafix " in the English translation ) meets his Alexandrian ( Egyptian ) friend the latter exclaims Je suis, mon cher ami, || très heureux de te voir at which Panoramix observes C ' est un Alexandrin (" That's an alexandrine!

The English translation renders this as " My dear old Getafix || How good to see you here ", with the reply " Aha, an Alexandrine ".

While convalescing in his Virginia home he wrote a book recording his prison experiences and escape, entitled: They Shall Not Have Me Published originally in ( Helion's ) English by Dutton & Co. of New York, in 1943, the book was received by the press as a work of astonishing literary power and one of the most realistic accounts of World War 2, from the French side.

In 1998, Oxford University Press produced a Canadian English dictionary, after five years of lexicographical research, entitled The Oxford Canadian Dictionary.

Also, in Chapter XI ( entitled ' How to compare two different Systems of Laws ') of Book XXIX he advises that " to determine which of those systems the French and English systems for the punishment of false witnesses is most agreeable to reason, we must take them each as a whole and compare them in their entirety.

The international version, entitled THE RETURN OF GODZILLA, was released on VHS ( dubbed in English ) in the UK in 1998.

This definition is explained in a book published in 1910 entitled " English as we Speak it in Ireland " by P. W. Joyce.

Before the English Civil War, a pamphlet by William Neade entitled The Double-Armed Man advocated that soldiers be trained in both the longbow and pike ; this advice was followed only by a few town militias.

Under the English legal system, judges are not necessarily entitled to make their own decisions about the development or interpretations of the law.

* XTC wrote a song entitled " Punch and Judy " during recording sessions for their album " English Settlement ".

In 1675, a book appeared in English entitled A Present for a Papist: Or the Life and Death of Pope Joan, Plainly Proving Out of the Printed Copies, and Manscriptes of Popish Writers and Others, That a Woman called JOAN, Was Really POPE of ROME, and Was There Deliver'd of a Bastard Son in the Open Street as She Went in Solemn Procession.

" In her much reprinted essay " Science Fiction and Mrs Brown ," the science fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin has approached an answer by first citing the essay written by the English author Virginia Woolf entitled " Mr Bennett and Mrs Brown " in which she states:

The second is a multi-volume dictionary, edited on principles similar to those of the Oxford English Dictionary, entitled Svenska Akademiens ordbok ( SAOB ).

Following commercial rivalries between the original English East India Company and a New East India Company created in 1698, a new Company was formed in 1708 by amalgamation, and entitled the “ United Company of Merchants of England, trading to the East Indies ”.

The movie, which was released in Japan on August 6, 1977, was edited down further and dubbed into English in 1978 ; entitled Space Cruiser Yamato or simply Space Cruiser, it was only given a limited theatrical release in Europe & Latin America, where it was called Patrulha Estelar ( Star Patrol ) or Astronave Intrepido ( Starship Intrepid ), though it was later released on video in most countries.

The first English edition, entitled " Dr Esperanto's International Tongue ", was translated by Julian Steinhaus.

Rickman has also been featured in several musical works – most notably in a song composed by the English songwriter Adam Leonard entitled " Not Alan Rickman ".

During the 1960s, Malraux published the first volume of a trilogy on art entitled The Metamorphosis of the Gods ; the second two volumes ( not yet translated into English ) were published shortly before he died.

This is entitled The Arabian Nights ' Entertainment-the first known use of the common English title of the work.

It is estimated that immediately before the 1832 Reform Act, 400, 000 English subjects were entitled to vote, and that after passage, the number rose to 650, 000, an increase of more than 60 %.

That same year he also published a sequel to Folie et déraison, entitled Naissance de la Clinique: une archéologie du regard médical, subsequently translated into English as Birth of the Clinic: An Archaeology of Medical Perception.

In 1954 the English composer Alan Rawsthorne set six of the poems in a work for speaker and orchestra entitled Practical Cats, which was recorded soon after, with the actor Robert Donat as the speaker.

Mary Mitford, author of the popular literary sketches of the English countryside entitled Our Village, also wrote a successful play concerned with events in Foscari's life.

And in 1717, Pierrot's name first appears in an English entertainment: a pantomime by John Rich entitled The Jealous Doctor ; or, The Intriguing Dame, in which the role was undertaken by a certain Mr. Griffin.
