In some jurisdictions, a fourth level, Intermediate Life Support ( ILS ), which is essentially a BLS provider with a moderately expanded skill set, may be present, but this level rarely functions independently, and where it is present may replace BLS in the emergency part of the service.

Integrated Logistics Support ( ILS ) is a discipline used in military industries to ensure an easily supportable system with a robust customer service ( logistic ) concept at the lowest cost and in line with ( often high ) reliability, availability, maintainability and other requirements as defined for the project.

The main runway ( 03R / 21L ) is and is used primarily for commercial flights, and is ILS Cat.

This ensures the aircraft is following the ILS centreline ( i. e., it provides lateral guidance ).

For example, the ILS for runway 4R at John F. Kennedy International Airport transmits IJFK to identify itself, while runway 4L is known as IHIQ.

This lets users know the facility is operating normally and that they are tuned to the correct ILS.

The distance from the runway at which this indication should be received is published in the documentation for that approach, together with the height at which the aircraft should be if correctly established on the ILS.

In modern ILS installations, a DME is installed, co-located with the ILS, to augment or replace marker beacons.

The output from the ILS receiver goes both to the display system ( head-down display and head-up display, if installed ) and can also go to a Flight Control Computer.

NDBs can also be colocated with DME in a similar installation for the ILS as the outer marker, only in this case, they function as the inner marker.

An instrument landing system ( ILS ) is also available.
