On January 28, 1835, Andrew Jackson removed Pope from office and elevated Territorial Secretary William S. Fulton to the position.

And their roles are paralleled by those of Patrick Henry, Nathan Hale, Andrew Jackson, Davy Crockett, Theodore Roosevelt and many, many more.

In this historic square are several statues, but the one that stands out over the others is that of Gen. Andrew Jackson, hero of the Battle of New Orleans.

Andrew Jackson ( March 15, 1767 June 8, 1845 ) was the seventh President of the United States ( 1829 – 1837 ).

His parents were Scots-Irish colonists Andrew and Elizabeth Hutchinson Jackson, Presbyterians who had emigrated from Ireland two years earlier.

Their former house is preserved as the Andrew Jackson Centre and is open to the public.

Other Revolutionary War heroes who became figures of American folklore include: Benedict Arnold, Benjamin Franklin, Nathan Hale, John Hancock, Andrew Jackson, and John Paul Jones and Francis Marion.

But, as America grew, industry became a larger and larger part of American life ; and, during the term of America's first populist president, Andrew Jackson, economic questions came to the forefront.

The Indian Removal Act was signed into law by President Andrew Jackson on May 26, 1830.

The authors Alec Waugh and Evelyn Waugh, the journalist Claud Cockburn, Claudia Cockburn ( wife of actor Michael Flanders ) and author Sarah Caudwell were all descended from Cockburn, as are journalists Laura Flanders, Stephanie Flanders, Alexander Cockburn ( husband of author Emma Tennant ), Andrew Cockburn ( husband of journalist Leslie Cockburn ) and Patrick Cockburn ( son-in-law of Bishop Hugh Montefiore ) and actress Olivia Wilde ( former wife of Tao Ruspoli ).

Claud Cockburn married three times: to Hope Hale Davis, with whom he fathered Claudia Cockburn Flanders ( wife of Michael Flanders ); to Jean Ross ( part model for Christopher Isherwood's Sally Bowles of Cabaret fame ), with whom he fathered Sarah Caudwell Cockburn, author of detective stories ; and in 1940 to Patricia Byron ( née Patricia Evangeline Anne Arbuthnot ( 17 March 1914-6 October 1989 ), married firstly on 10 October 1933 to Arthur Cecil Byron, son of Cecil Byron, by whom she had a son Darrell Byron, who died in Ireland aged two, divorcing in 1940, daughter of Major John Bernard Arbuthnot and Olive Blake ), who wrote the book The Years of the Week and also wrote an autobiography, Figure of Eight, with whom he fathered Alexander, Andrew ( husband of Leslie Cockburn ), and Patrick, all three of whom are also journalists.

Their daughter ( Elizabeth Sinclair ) would marry Andrew Leslie, Master of Rothes.

The photographic collections at Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, the national museum, hold many of the surviving images from this era, including images by Thomas Andrew, Leslie Adkin, James Bragge, and Spencer Digby in addition to archives of the Burton Brothers, Alfred John Tattersall and John McGarrigle's American Photographic Company.
