Additional similarities exist between Trollocs and Orcs, Myrddraal and Nazgûl, Padan Fain and Gollum, Lan and Aragorn, Moiraine and Gandalf, Baerlon and Bree, The Mountains of Mist and The Misty Mountains, The Ways and Moria, The Black Wind and The Balrog, and the Green Man and Treebeard.

Aragorn eventually succeeded, and Gandalf questioned Gollum, threatening him with fire when he proved unwilling to speak.

Taking charge of the Fellowship ( comprising nine representatives of the free peoples of Middle-earth, " set against the Nine Riders "), Gandalf and Aragorn led the Hobbits and their companions south.

After the war, Gandalf crowned Aragorn as King Elessar, and helped him find a sapling of the White Tree of Gondor.

It is at Meduseld that Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, and Gandalf meet with King Théoden in the account of the early stages of the War of the Ring.

Denethor attempts to immolate himself and Faramir on his funeral pyre, but Gandalf and Pippin succeed in saving Faramir, who is subsequently healed by Aragorn.

Knowing that it is only a matter of time before Sauron rebuilds his forces for another attack, Gandalf and Aragorn decide to draw out the hosts of Mordor with an assault on the Black Gate, providing a distraction so that Frodo and Sam may have a chance of reaching Mount Doom and destroy the One Ring, unseen by the Eye of Sauron.

Gandalf and Aragorn lead an army to the Black Gate of Mordor and lay siege to Sauron's army.

Gandalf's plan to distract Sauron from the Ring is successful: Mordor is almost empty as all the remaining Orcs have been summoned to defend the land against the assault of the army led by Gandalf and Aragorn.

Aragorn understood from him also that Gandalf was missing, that Frodo had left the Shire without Gandalf, that Black Riders were trailing Frodo, and that Frodo had not been seen leaving Buckland.

The Hobbits Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took, as the new " doorwardens ", received Théoden King of Rohan, Aragorn and Gandalf at the gates.

After Saruman's defeat he was confronted by Théoden King of Rohan, Gandalf and Aragorn, at which time Gríma Wormtongue, Saruman's servant, threw the palantír at the group in an attempt to kill them or possibly Gandalf.

The Army of the West, led by Aragorn, marched on the gate as a diversionary feint to distract Sauron's attention from Frodo and Sam, who were carrying the One Ring through Mordor.

The armies of the West, led by Gandalf and Aragorn, on the brink of defeat and annihilation, thus claim victory.

When the characters led by Aragorn leave Moria they emerge onto a rocky plateau.

Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli manage to survive all this and join the remaining forces of Rohan at Helm's Deep for the Battle of the Hornburg further aided by the Lórien Elves led by Haldir and sent by Elrond.
