According to Claudian, Stilicho was in a position to destroy the Goths when he was ordered by Arcadius to leave Illyricum.

Arcadius (; ; 377 / 378 – 1 May 408 ) was the Byzantine Emperor from 395 until his death in 408.

Arcadius was born in Hispania, the elder son of Theodosius I and Aelia Flaccilla, and brother of Honorius, who would become a Western Roman Emperor.

As emperors, Honorius was under the control of the Romanized Vandal magister militum Flavius Stilicho while Arcadius was dominated by one of his ministers, Rufinus.

Arcadius was dominated for the rest of his rule by Anthemius, the Praetorian Prefect, who made peace with Stilicho in the West.

Arcadius himself was more concerned with appearing to be a pious Christian than he was with political or military matters, and he died, only nominally in control of his Empire, in 408.

A new forum was built in the name of Arcadius, on the seventh hill of Constantinople, the Xērolophos, in which a column was begun to commemorate his ' victory ' over Gainas ( although the column was only completed after Arcadius ' death by Theodosius II ).

The Pentelic marble portrait head of Arcadius ( illustration ) was discovered in Istanbul close to the Forum Tauri, in June 1949, in excavating foundations for new buildings of the University at Beyazit.

He was the younger son of emperor Theodosius I and his first wife Aelia Flaccilla, and brother of the eastern emperor Arcadius.

Placidia was a younger, paternal half-sister of Emperors Arcadius and Honorius.

Serena was a first cousin of Arcadius, Honorius and Placidia.

He was called back by Arcadius almost immediately, as the people became " tumultuous " over his departure.

There was also an earthquake the night of his arrest, which Eudoxia took for a sign of God's anger, prompting her to ask Arcadius for John's reinstatement.

Stilicho also claimed to be the guardian of Arcadius, causing much rivalry between the western and eastern courts.

It was also through his mother's side of the family that he was the nephew of Honorius and first cousin to Theodosius II ( the son of Honorius ' brother Arcadius ), who was eastern emperor for most of Valentianian's life.

Synesius composed and addressed to Emperor Arcadius a speech entitled De regno, full of topical advice as to the studies of a wise ruler, but also containing a bold statement that the emperor's first priority must be a war on corruption and a war on interpenetration of barbarians in Byzantine army.

Zosimus reports that Arcadius was also influenced by the extraordinary beauty of his bride but this is considered doubtful by later scholars.

He also claimed control over Arcadius in Constantinople, but Rufinus, magister officiorum on the spot, had already established his own power there.

Arcadius was author of ' Russian Economic History, The Nineteenth Century ' also ' The Plow the Hammer and the Knout ' The latter book presents his explanation of the foundation in the Eighteenth Century of the Russian economy and power structure.

Stilicho is alleged by some to have wanted control of both Emperors, and is supposed to have had Rufinus assassinated by Gothic mercenaries in 395 ; though definite proof of Stilicho's involvement in the assassination is lacking, the intense competition and political jealousies engendered by the two figures compose the main thread of the first part of Arcadius ' reign.

In that year, the Visigoths ' most famous king, Alaric I, took the throne, while Theodosius was succeeded by his incapable sons: Arcadius in the east and Honorius in the west.

Gainas, an ambitious Gothic leader, attempts to evacuate his soldiers out of the city but 7, 000 armed Goths are trapped and killed by order of Arcadius.

Over the next few years Heraclius was preoccupied with his prosecution of the war against the Sassanids, but by 626 he had issued a decree to Arcadius, Bishop of Cyprus, requesting that he teach the doctrine of " one hegumenic energy ".

However, these narratives were written a century and a half after the death of Arcadius, and have been rejected by modern scholars due to the silence of contemporary writers as outweighing the positive statements of the later ones.

By his first wife, the probably Spanish Aelia Flaccilla Augustus, he had two sons, Arcadius and Honorius and a daughter, Aelia Pulcheria ; Arcadius was his heir in the East and Honorius in the West.

Tarasis had a wife, Arcadia, whose name indicates a relationship with the Constantinopolitan aristocracy, and whose statue was erected near the Baths of Arcadius, along the steps that led to Topoi.

Sidonius's grandson Arcadius, on hearing a rumor that the Frankish king Theuderic I had died, betrayed Clermont to Childebert I, only to abandon his wife and mother when Theuderic appeared ; his other appearance in the history of Gregory of Tours is as a servant of king Childebert.

In the early 5th century, the town was officially renamed Eudoxiopolis ( Εὐδοξιόπολις ) in Greek, during the reign of the Byzantine emperor Arcadius ( 377 – 408 ), after his wife Aelia Eudoxia, though this name did not survive.
