Hephaestus is one of the most even-tempered of the Hellenic deities ; in the narrative embedded in the Odyssey Aphrodite seems to prefer Ares, the volatile god of war, as she was attracted to his violent nature.

Pausanias, also refers to a statue of Ares by Alcamenes that was erected on the Athenian agora, which some have related to the Ares Borghese.

Notable queens of the Amazons are Penthesilea, who participated in the Trojan War, and her sister Hippolyta, whose magical girdle, given to her by her father Ares, was the object of one of the labours of Hercules.

Her son only venerated Ares and was fully devoted to war, neglecting love and marriage.

Ares (, Μodern Greek: Άρης ) was the Greek god of war.

The Greeks were ambivalent toward Ares: although he embodied the physical valor necessary for success in war, he was a dangerous force, " overwhelming, insatiable in battle, destructive, and man-slaughtering.

Thrace was Ares ' birthplace, true home, and refuge after the affair with Aphrodite was exposed to the general mockery of the other gods.

In Sparta, Ares was viewed as a masculine soldier in which his resilience, physical strength and military intelligence was unrivaled.

Ares was also worshipped by the Baharna of Tylos, however it is not known in the form of which Arabian god or if he was worshipped in his Greek form.

The temple to Ares in the agora of Athens that Pausanias saw in the second century AD had only been moved and rededicated there during the time of Augustus ; in essence it was a Roman temple to the Augustan Mars Ultor.

The Areopagus, the " mount of Ares " where Paul of Tarsus preached, is sited at some distance from the Acropolis ; from archaic times it was a site of trials.

Enyalius, rather than another name for Ares, in at least one tradition was his son by Enyo.

One of the roles of Ares that was sited in mainland Greece itself was in the founding myth of Thebes: Ares was the progenitor of the water-dragon slain by Cadmus, for the dragon's teeth were sown into the ground as if a crop and sprung up as the fully armored autochthonic Spartoi.

Ares was acquitted.

He would make his in-ring return on March 18, 2006, at a westside Xtreme wrestling event, where he defeated Ares for the wXw World Heavyweight Championship.

However, the temple of Ares to which he refers had only been moved from Acharnes and re-sited in the Agora in Augustus's time, and statues known to derive from Alcamenes ' statue show the god in a breastplate, so the identification of Alcamenes ' Ares with the Ares Borghese is not secure.

The counterpart of Ares among the Roman gods is Mars, who as a father of the Roman people held a more important and dignified place in ancient Roman religion for his agricultural and tutelary functions.

The etymology of the name Ares is traditionally connected with the Greek word ἀρή ( arē ), the Ionic form of the Doric ἀρά ( ara ), " bane, ruin, curse, imprecation ".

Walter Burkert notes that " Ares is apparently an ancient abstract noun meaning throng of battle, war.

Its connection with Ares, perhaps based on a false etymology, is purely etiological myth.

The sister and companion of the violent Ares is Eris, the goddess of discord, or Enyo, the goddess of war, bloodshed, and violence.

The other Strife is presumably she who appears in Homer's Iliad Book IV ; equated with Enyo as sister of Ares and so presumably daughter of Zeus and Hera:

: Strife whose wrath is relentless, she is the sister and companion of murderous Ares, she who is only a little thing at the first, but thereafter grows until she strides on the earth with her head striking heaven.

She is predominantly pictured with Zeus or Athena and sometimes Ares.

Enyo, a war goddess responsible with the destruction of cities and attendant of Ares, is also mentioned as a daughter of Zeus and Hera, though Homer equates her with Eris.

in the course of the Nika Riot, “ The temple of Sophia, the baths of Zeuxippus, and the imperial courtyard from the Propylaia all the way to the so-called House of Ares were burned up and destroyed, as were both of the great porticos that lead to the forum that is named after Constantine, houses of prosperous people, and a great deal of other properties .” The warring factions of Byzantine society, the Blues and the Greens, opposed each other in the chariot races at the Hippodrome and often resorted to violence.

This proposed rocket is dubbed " Ares ", which would utilize space shuttle Advanced Solid Rocket Boosters, a modified shuttle external tank, and a new Lox / LH2 third stage for the trans-Mars injection of the payload.

The first is an otherwise obscure incident of the Trojan War, the " Quarrel of Odysseus and Achilles "; the second is the amusing tale of a love affair between two Olympian gods, Ares and Aphrodite.

Ares was supposed to have been tried here by the gods for the murder of Poseidon's son Alirrothios ( a typical example of an aetiological myth ).

The Greek gods may also have had their origins in the personification of material objects: Ares representing iron, and Dionysus wine.

Likewise, Xena is suggested to have strong feelings for Ares, but over the course of the series, never pursued them.

These resulted in many godly and heroic offspring, including Athena, Apollo and Artemis, Hermes, Persephone ( by Demeter ), Dionysus, Perseus, Heracles, Helen of Troy, Minos, and the Muses ( by Mnemosyne ); by Hera, he is usually said to have fathered Ares, Hebe and Hephaestus.

During this time the Ares I and Orion as well as the Altair Lunar Lander were to be under development ( although now these programs have been canceled ).

When Pausanias visited the city of Triteia in the second century CE, he was told that the name of the city was derived from an eponymous Triteia, a daughter of Triton, and that it claimed to have been founded by her son ( with Ares ), one among several mythic heroes named Melanippus (" Black Horse ").

Paris gave the crown to Ares without hesitation ; it was this apparent honesty in judgment that prompted the gods of Olympus to have Paris arbitrate the divine contest between Hera, Aphrodite, and Athena.

Adonis was killed by a wild boar, said to have been sent vicariously by Artemis, jealous of Adonis ' hunting skills or in retaliation for Aphrodite instigating the death of Hippolytus, a favorite of the huntress goddess ; or by Aphrodite's paramour, Ares, who was jealous of Aphrodite's love for Adonis ; or by Apollo, to punish Aphrodite for blinding his son, Erymanthus.

In Greek mythology, Oeneus, or Oineus ( Οἰνεύς ) was a Calydonian king, son of Porthaon and Euryte, husband of Althaea and father of Deianeira, Meleager, Toxeus, Clymenus, Periphas, Agelaus, Thyreus ( or Phereus or Pheres ), Gorge, Eurymede, Mothone, Perimede and Melanippe ( although Meleager's and Deianeira's fathers could also have been Ares and Dionysus respectively ).

Red Mars starts in 2026 with the first colonial voyage to Mars aboard the Ares, the largest interplanetary spacecraft ever built ( interestingly, from clustered space shuttle external fuel tanks which, instead of incinerating in the atmosphere, have been boosted into orbit until enough had been amassed to build a ship and also used as landing craft ) and home to a crew who are to be the first hundred Martian colonists.

Areios could have come from Ares or from the Erinyes, as on its foot was erected a temple dedicated to the Erinyes where murderers used to find shelter so as not to face the consequences of their actions.
