The Highland Boundary Fault runs past Bute and through the northern part of Arran, so from a geological perspective some of the islands are in the Highlands and some in the Central Lowlands.

Ailsa Craig, which lies some south of Arran, has been quarried for a rare type of micro-granite containing riebeckite known as " Ailsite " which is used to make curling stones.

In 1543 Robert Boyd protested against the reduction of the forfeiture of Sir James Colville of East Wemyss, and early the next year he rendered material assistance to the Regent James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran, against the faction supporting Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox, at the Battle of Glasgow.

Balnaves was surprised to meet the young Earl of Arran there.

He found that Arran had moved his army across the Esk by the ' Roman bridge ', and was advancing rapidly to meet him.

In December 1552, Mary of Austria, Queen of Hungary, sister of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, pointed out to Mary that her diplomatic complaints had no force and must come from Arran.

On the 16 August 1560 he signed the address to Elizabeth, praying her to marry the James Hamilton, Earl of Arran, and on the 27 January 1561 he subscribed the " Book of Discipline of the Kirk ".

In common with most islands of the west coast of Scotland, rainfall is generally high at between per annum on Bute, the Cumbraes and in the south of Arran and per annum in the north of Arran.

An example at Monamore on Arran has been dated to 3160 BC, although it was almost certainly built earlier than that, possibly c. 4000BC.

On the 1787 trip to the Isle of Arran he found his first example of Hutton's Unconformity to the north of Newton Point near Lochranza, but the limited view meant that the condition of the underlying strata was not clear enough for him, and he incorrectly thought that the strata were conformable at a depth below the exposed outcrop.

Somerset led a large and well equipped army to Scotland, where he and the Scottish regent James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran, commanded their armies at the Battle of Pinkie Cleugh on 10 September 1547.

As progress at the siege was slow, James sent Hans the royal gunner in Robert Barton's ship and then the Earl of Arran with provisions and more artillery.

In retaliation the Protestant leader, the Duke of Châtelherault, sent his son the Earl of Arran and the Master of Maxwell to seize Bothwell's home Crichton Castle and force the Earl, who was at Borthwick, to join them.

The boundaries of Arran have shifted throughout history, sometimes encompassing the entire territory of the present day Republic of Azerbaijan, and at other times only parts of the South Caucasus.

There is also an obscure reference in The Prophecy of Berchán hinting that King Máel Coluim mac Cináeda of Scotland may have been active in Islay and Arran at about this time, emphasising the potentially fluid nature of Scandinavian, Norse-Gael and Scots influence during this period.

The monument was erected at the initiative of the Canadian descendants of the Arran emigrants.

Raised beaches are found in a wide variety of coast and geodynamical background such as subduction on the pacific coast of South America ( Pedoja et al., 2006 ), of North America, passive margin of the Atlantic coast of South America ( Rostami et al., 2000 ), collision context on the Pacific coast of Kamchatka ( Pedoja et al., 2006 ), Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Japan ( Ota and Yamaguchi, 2004 ), passive margin of the South China sea coast ( Pedoja et al., in press ), on west-facing Atlantic coasts, such as Donegal Bay, County Cork and County Kerry in Ireland ; Bude, Widemouth Bay, Crackington Haven, Tintagel, Perranporth and St Ives in Cornwall, the Vale of Glamorgan, Gower Peninsula, Pembrokeshire and Cardigan Bay in Wales, the Isle of Jura and Isle of Arran in Scotland, Finistère in Brittany and Galicia in Northern Spain and at Squally Point in the Cape Chignecto Provincial Park, Nova Scotia.
