As a result of the new covenant, God's chosen people are now the corporate body of Christ, the church ( sometimes called spiritual Israel – see also Covenant theology ).

According to the book, for a quarter century prior to the destruction, Jeremiah repeatedly issued prophecies predicting God's forthcoming judgment ; advocating the Israelites to put down their idols and repent in hopes of turning away God's judgment and fulfilling their destiny as His chosen people.

The promise has three elements: posterity ( i. e., descendants-Abraham is told that his descendants will be as innumerable as the stars ), divine-human relationship ( Israel is to be God's chosen people ), and land ( the land of Canaan, cursed by Noah immediately after the Deluge ).

The present Church dispensation concerns Christians ( mainly Gentiles ) and is a parenthesis to God's main plan of dealing with and blessing his chosen people the Jews.

The main sects ( see also English Dissenters ) were Baptists, who advocated adult rebaptism ; Ranters, who claimed that sin did not exist for the " chosen ones "; and Fifth Monarchy Men, who opposed all " earthly " governments, believing they must prepare for God's kingdom on earth by establishing a " government of saints ".

For strictly observant Jews, being " chosen " fundamentally means that it was God's wish that a group of people would exist in a covenant, and would be bound to obey a certain set of laws as a duty of their covenant, and that the Children of Israel chose to enter into this covenant with God.

In Paul talks about how the nation of Israel has been cast away, and the conditions under which Israel will be God's chosen nation again: when Israel returns to its faith, sets aside its unbelief.

The narrative tells how Israel's Messiah, having been rejected by Israel ( i. e., God's chosen people ), withdrew into the circle of his disciples, passed judgment on those who had rejected him ( so that " Israel " becomes the non-believing " Jews "), and finally sent the disciples instead to the gentiles

Prior to the Crucifixion the Jews are called Israelites, the honorific title of God's chosen people ; after it, they are called " Ioudaioi ", Jews, a sign that through their rejection of the Christ the " kingdom of Heaven " has been taken away from them and given instead to the church.

" Concurrently with these exceptions, Jehovah's Witnesses in their literature and assemblies have taught their leadership was personally chosen by Jesus Christ in 1919 ( a prophetic year in JW eschatology ) and that they are " God's sole channel on earth ", and " Jehovah's spirit directed organization ".

( Ironically, the Chronicler is very generous to the south Judah and considers it God's will to recover the chosen people that they were destroyed by Babylon and exiled to Babylon.

After Babylon the Great has been removed, they say, the world powers shall move against God's chosen people for a short while.

# The Children of Israel were God's original chosen people by virtue of an ancient covenant, but by rejecting Jesus they forfeited their chosenness-and now, by virtue of a New Covenant ( or " testament "), Christians have replaced the Jews as God's chosen people, the Church having become the " People of God.

Most see Haile Selassie I as Jah or Jah Rastafari, who is the second coming of Jesus Christ onto the earth, but to others he is simply God's chosen king on earth.

He counseled that King Balak and his people ensnare God's chosen people by offering them prostitutes and unclean food sacrificed to idols.

Messianic Jews believe God's people have a responsibility to spread his name and fame to all nations ( Psalms 96: 3, Ezekiel 3: 18 – 19 ) It is believed that the Children of Israel were, remain, and will continue to be the chosen people of the God, and are central to his plans for existence.

There exist among Messianic believers a number of perspectives regarding who exactly makes up God's chosen people.

Messianic Jews, in varying degrees, challenge both thoughts, and instead believing that although Israel has rejected Jesus, it has not forfeited its status as God's chosen people ( Matthew 5: 17 ).

God's commission to Joshua in chapter 1 is framed as a royal installation, the people's pledge of loyalty to Joshua as successor Moses recalls royal practices, the covenant-renewal ceremony led by Joshua was the prerogative of the kings of Judah, and God's command to Joshua to meditate on the " book of the law " day and night parallels the description of Josiah in 2 Kings 23: 25 as a king uniquely concerned with the study of the law — not to mention their identical territorial goals ( Josiah died in 609 BCE while attempting to annex the former Israel to his own kingdom of Judah ).

He prays to God, recalling the sins of Israel and God's promise of restoration to the Land, and asks Artaxerxes for leave to return to Jerusalem and rebuild its walls ; the king is receptive and extends his aid to this mission.

:" Meanwhile it happened that Swedish ambassadors had come to the Emperor Louis the Pious, and, amongst other matters which they had been ordered to bring to the attention of the emperor, they informed him that there were many belonging to their nation who desired to embrace the Christian religion, and that their king so far favoured this suggestion that lie would permit God's priests to reside there, provided that they might be deemed worthy of such a favour and that the emperor would send them suitable preachers.

The Christian view of Jesus as Messiah goes beyond such claims and is the fulfillment and union of three anointed offices ; a prophet like Moses who delivers God's commands and covenant and frees people from bondage, a High Priest in the order of Melchizedek overshadowing the Levite priesthood and a king like King David ruling over Jews, and like God ruling over the whole world and coming from the line of David.

In Ezekiel 28: 12-19 the prophet Ezekiel ( the " son of man ") sets down God's word against the king of Tyre: the king was the " seal of perfection ", adorned with precious stones from the day of his creation, placed by God in the garden of Eden on the holy mountain as a guardian cherub.

But the king sinned through wickedness and violence, and so he was driven out of the garden and thrown to the earth, where now he is consumed by God's fire: " All the nations who knew you are appalled at you, you have come to a horrible end and will be no more.

It concludes that the closest parallels with Isaiah's description of the king of Babylon as a fallen morning star cast down from heaven are to be found not in any lost Canaanite and other myths but in traditional ideas of the Jewish people themselves, echoed in the Biblical account of the fall of Adam and Eve, cast out of God's presence for wishing to be as God, and the picture in of the " gods " and " sons of the Most High " destined to die and fall.

Because God sent lions among them to kill them, the king of the Assyrians sent one of the priests from Bethel to teach the new settlers about God's ordinances.

In 1505 she refounded and enlarged God's House, Cambridge as Christ's College with a royal charter from the king.

As such, an attack on a king by one of his own subjects was taken to amount to a direct challenge to the monarch, to his Divine Right to Rule, and thus to God's will.

They believe that Jesus Christ has been ruling in heaven as king since 1914 ( a date they believe was prophesied in Scripture ), and that after that time a period of cleansing occurred, resulting in God's selection of the Bible Students associated with Charles Taze Russell to be his people in 1919.

For example, Cyrus the Great, the king of Persia, though not a Hebrew, is referred to as " God's anointed " ( Messiah ) in the Bible.

Immanuel ( or Emmanuel or Imanu ' el, Hebrew ע ִ מ ָּ נו ּ א ֵ ל meaning " God is with us ") is a symbolic name which appears in chapters 7 and 8 of the Book of Isaiah as part of a prophecy assuring king Ahaz of Judah of God's protection against enemy kings ; it is quoted in the Gospel of Matthew as a sign verifying the divine status of Jesus.

A century later, in the time of Josiah, the prophecy was revised to present Ahaz as the faithless king who rejected God's promise of protection for Jerusalem and the house of David, with the result that God brought Assyria to devastate the land until a new and faithful king ( presumably Josiah ) would arise.

Jesse (), Eshai or Yishai, (, meaning " God exists " or " God's gift "; Yassa ; Iessai ; ) is the father of David, who became the king of the Israelites.

Emeric, king of Croatia and Hungary, condemned the crusade, because of an argument about the possible heresy committed by God's army in attacking a Christian city.

Thus the attack on the French absolute monarchy was seen as an attack on God's anointed king.

I mean such concepts as the presence of the supernatural in human affairs, the sacraments of grace and divine retribution, the idea of preordainment ( the oracle over Oedipus, the prophecy of the witches to Macbeth, or God's covenant with His people in Athalie ).

The theme of descendants marks the first event in Numbers, the census of Israel's fighting men: the huge number which results ( over 600, 000 ) demonstrates the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham of innumerable descendants, as well as serving as God's guarantee of victory in Canaan.

In this text, God's agony is expressed over the betrayal of Israel.

Chapter 11 is God's lament over the necessity of giving up the Northern Kingdom, which is a large part of the people of Israel, whom God loves.

Goldsworthy schematizes the Kingdom of God as the expression of God's rule over God's people in God's place.

Dr Philip Irving Mitchell of the Dallas Baptist University notes that some philosophers have cast the pursuit of theodicy as a modern one, as earlier scholars used the problem of evil to support the existence of one particular god over another, explain wisdom, or explain a conversion, rather than to justify God's goodness.
