Haupt's critical work is distinguished by a combination of the most painstaking investigation with bold conjecture ; his oft-cited dictum that " If the sense requires it, I am prepared to write Constantinopolitanus where the MSS have the monosyllabic interjection o " well expresses this boldness.

President Abraham Lincoln was impressed with Haupt's work there.

The mainland of Cape Vert, however, was under control of the Jolof Empire, as part of the western province of Cayor which seceded from Jolof in its own right in 1549.

Just nine years later in 1497 on the orders of Manuel I of Portugal, four vessels under the command of navigator Vasco da Gama rounded the Cape of Good Hope, continuing to the eastern coast of Africa to Malindi to sail across the Indian Ocean to Calicut in south India-the capital of the local Zamorin rulers. The wealth of the Indies was now open for the Europeans to explore ; the Portuguese Empire was the earliest European seaborne empire to grow from the spice trade.

In 1920, SCOTIA merged into DOMCO / DISCO to form the British Empire Steel Corporation ( BESCO ) and began a protracted series of disputes with the United Mine Workers of America, District 26 ; BESCO's anti-labour policies resulted in this district becoming one of the most militant in North America and made Industrial Cape Breton a pro-labour community.

Over the following months, invading British Empire and French troops, who had landed near Cape Helles at the end of the peninsula, made several attempts to capture the village.

The territory was occupied by the British Empire in 1874 and, shortly before the death of its founder and only leader, Adam Kok III, the small country was incorporated into the neighbouring Cape Colony.
