Writing in " Eine Mitteilung an meine Freunde " (" A Communication to my Friends ") in 1851, Wagner claimed that Der fliegende Holländer represented a new start for him: " From here begins my career as poet, and my farewell to the mere concoctor of opera-texts.

Starting from the 19th century Taormina became a popular tourist resort in the whole of Europe: people who visited Taormina include Oscar Wilde, Nicholas I of Russia, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Nietzsche ( who here wrote his Also sprach Zarathustra ), Richard Wagner and many others.

Though Wagner was working on his epic Der Ring des Nibelungen, he found himself intrigued by the legend of Tristan und Isolde.

This impact, together with his discovery of the philosophy of Arthur Schopenhauer in October 1854, led Wagner to find himself in a " serious mood created by Schopenhauer, which was trying to find ecstatic expression.

The next production of Tristan was in Weimar in 1874, and Wagner himself supervised another production of Tristan, this time in Berlin, in March 1876, but the opera was only given in his own theatre at the Bayreuth Festival, after Wagner's death.

At the time there was a feud between advocates of the music of Wagner and Brahms ; by aligning himself with Wagner, Bruckner made an unintentional enemy out of Hanslick.

The combined influence of Ravel, Hindu spiritualism and English folk tunes enabled Holst to free himself of the influence of Wagner and Strauss and to forge his own style.

He was also invited to conduct the Hammersmith Socialist Choir, teaching them Madrigals by Thomas Morley, choruses by Purcell, extracts from Wagner as well as works by Mozart and himself.

Adolf Hitler presented himself as an admirer of Wagner's music, and is said to have claimed that " there is only one legitimate predecessor to National Socialism: Wagner ".

In fact Wagner himself never publicly named any of his leitmotifs, preferring to emphasise their flexibility of association, role in the musical form, and emotional effect.
