Missouri Attorney General John Danforth, who was then in his second term, hired Ashcroft as an Assistant Attorney General.

In the end, Ashcroft won 57 percent of the vote and carried 106 counties — then the largest Republican gubernatorial victory in Missouri history.

The Verve were an English alternative rock band formed in 1989 in Wigan by lead vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bass guitarist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury.

Fronted by singer Richard Ashcroft, the band caused a buzz in early 1991 for its ability to captivate audiences with its musical textures and avant-garde sensibilities.

The group were signed by Hut Records in 1991 and their first studio releases in 1992, " All In The Mind ", " She's a Superstar ", and " Gravity Grave " ( along with the December 1992 Verve ) saw the band become a critical success, making an impression with freeform guitar work by McCabe and unpredictable vocals by Ashcroft.

The album reached the UK Top 20 upon its release in July, but Ashcroft broke up the band three months later, just before the release of the third single " History ", which reached No. 24 in September.

The band made no live appearances for all of 1996, apart from a solo performance from Ashcroft supporting Oasis in New York.

Critic Mike Gee of iZINE said of this time, " The Verve, as he ( Richard Ashcroft ) promised, had become the greatest band in the world.

The band's singles were given extensive airplay on US rock stations and Ashcroft, and band mates, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine in March 1998.

By the time the band had split, Ashcroft had already been working on solo material accompanied by, among others, Salisbury and Cole.

However, after Ashcroft learned that Salisbury was in contact with McCabe over a possible side project, Ashcroft contacted McCabe and Jones, making peace with them, and the band reformed.

On 7 July 2010 Ashcroft confirmed that the band " is over for good ", though some weeks later did not rule out another Verve reunion.

Richard Ashcroft was so impressed with Oasis during the time, that he invited them to tour with his band The Verve as an opening act.

He is also a regular on the digital radio sports show, " TalkSPORT " Other notable friends of his are, Mani of The Stone Roses, Richard Ashcroft of The Verve – for whom he dedicated a song, " Cast No Shadow ", the band members of the Chemical Brothers ,-Sex Pistols members John Lydon and Steve Jones the members of the rock band Kasabian, Andy Nicholson, boxer Ricky Hatton, Paul McCartney, Liverpool F. C footballer Jamie Carragher, Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Johnny Marr, Paul Weller, Ian Brown, John Squire, Lee Mavers, Jack Dee, Craig Cash, Kelly Jones and Johnny Depp ( who played slide guitar on the Oasis song Fade In-Out ).

The band split in 1995, and around this time Ashcroft wrote a collection of songs he intended to release as his first solo album.

Ashcroft was at the forefront of the band's popularity, receiving an Ivor Novello Award for his songwriting and being referred to by the press as " the unmistakable face of the Number One rock band in England ".

Controversy exists over The Verve's biggest hit, " Bitter Sweet Symphony ", on which Ashcroft is the sole band member to share a co-writing credit.

Ashcroft made peace with him and bassist Simon Jones and the band reformed.

As a teenager, he played in a rock band called QED, in which he, Cliff Ashcroft, Mark Fawl and Chris Swift wrote much of their own music and lyrics.

The band played their biggest tour to date in October – November 2006 and also supported Richard Ashcroft in his homecoming gig at the Lancashire County Cricket Club on 17 June.
