Old mining camps that have lost most of their population at some stage of their history, such as Aspen, Central City, Crested Butt, Cripple Creek, Deadwood, Marysville, Oatman, Park City, St. Elmo, Tombstone, and Virginia City, are sometimes included in the category, although they are active towns and cities today.

The D & RG built west from Leadville over Tennessee Pass in an attempt to reach the mining areas around Aspen, Colorado before its rival railroad in the area, the Colorado Midland, could build a line reaching there.

In 1945, Paepcke visited Bauhaus Artist and Architect Herbert Bayer, AIA, who had designed and built a Bauhaus-inspired minimalist home outside the decaying former mining town of Aspen, in the Roaring Fork Valley.

Likewise the extension of the railroad network up the Roaring Fork Valley to the previously failed mining town of Aspen in the late 1880s made the extraction of silver ore there economically feasible, and saved the town from near extinction.

At that time, Aspen was a faded mining town whose population had dwindled to less than a thousand.

The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad constructed a narrow gauge railroad over Tennessee Pass in 1881 as part of their extension to the Aspen area to beat the Colorado Midland Standard Gauge route to the rich mining area.

The range has been the site of mining activity since the days of the Colorado Silver Boom, which saw the founding of mining towns such as Aspen and Ashcroft.

The mountain is not particularly high but nonetheless looms over the town of Aspen because of the proximity of the town, which was founded as a silver mining camp in 1879 during the Colorado Silver Boom.

Paepcke, a successful Chicago industrialist, founded the company as part of larger effort at turning Aspen, a somewhat forgotten silver mining town, into an idyllic center for the advancement of the body, mind, and Spirit.

As one of the top 10 community colleges in the United States ( named by Aspen Institute College Excellence Program 2011 ), SBCC is known for its excellent transfer rates to the four-year colleges and universities.

North of Glenmont on Georgia Avenue is Aspen Hill ( another unincorporated community ) and Leisure World, a large retirement community.

Valencia was named the top community college in the United States in 2011 by The Aspen Institute.

The Aspen Institute awarded Valencia the first annual Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence after a year-long effort to recognize extraordinary accomplishments in individual institutions of the nation ’ s 1, 200 community colleges.

The Aspen award was granted based on, " a rigorous, yearlong effort ... to assemble and review an unprecedented collection of data on community colleges and the critical elements of student success: student learning, degree completion and transfer, equity and employment / earnings after college.

Recently widened to four-lanes along the 50 mile ( 80 km ) section between Glenwood Springs and Aspen, it is heavily used commuting route for day workers between bedroom communities in the lower valley and the resort community of Aspen.

His past community involvement has included terms as chair and elected board member of the Whitecourt School District Board of Trustees, chair and vice-chair of the Whitecourt / Fox Creek Hospital Board, member of the Aspen Regional Health Authority, member of the Northern Gateway Regional Division No. 10 School Authority and elected member of the Woodland County Council.

Aspen Cove is a small fishing community in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

B. Clark Wheeler, an early investor in mines at Aspen, further down the valley, where silver had been found in even greater abundance than Independence's gold, funded the construction of a stage road to Leadville, the first road to cross the pass.
