The report " Mary: Faith and Hope in Christ ", by the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission, concluded that the teaching about Mary in the two definitions of the Assumption and the Immaculate Conception can be said to be consonant with the teaching of the Scriptures and the ancient common traditions.

A Latin text was found in Milan in the 19th century by Antonio Ceriani who called it the Assumption of Moses, even though it does not refer to an assumption of Moses or contain portions of the Assumption which are cited by ancient authors, and it is apparently actually the Testimony.

The decisions of fourteen later councils that Catholics hold as dogmatic and two decrees promulgated by Popes ' exercising papal infallibility ( see Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Mary ) are considered as being a part of the Church's sacred body of doctrine.

Observed by Roman Catholics and some Anglicans on August 15, which is the same as the Eastern and Orthodox feast of the Dormition, the end of the earthly life of the Virgin Mary and, for some, her bodily Assumption into heaven, is celebrated.

The Annunciation monastery, likewise surrounded by strong walls, has another five-domed cathedral ( 1649 ) and the Assumption church ( 1678 ).

In her Pulitzer Prize-nominated book The Nurture Assumption, author Judith Harris argues that " nurture ," as traditionally defined in terms of family upbringing does not effectively explain the variance for most traits ( such as adult IQ and the Big Five personality traits ) in the general population of the United States.

The Catholic Church, too, views holy tradition in much the same terms, as a passing down of that same Apostolic Faith, but, in a critical difference from the Eastern Orthodox position, holds that the Faith continues to deepen and develop over time, and in our understanding of it, all the while staying the same ; thus the doctrine of the Trinity, the two natures of Christ, the divine motherhood, the Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Mary, along with other central Catholic Christian doctrines were not fully defined until many years after Christ had ascended and the Apostles had died, and that our understanding of them may continue to deepen, not only through mystical experience, but through the sciences of philosophy and theology, exemplified by the Scholastics, such as Saint Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, and William of Ockham of the High Middle Ages.

The Eastern Orthodox Church liturgical calendar begins on 1 September – proceeding annually from the Nativity of the Theotokos to the celebration of Jesus ' birth in the winter ( Christmas ), through his death and resurrection in the spring ( Pascha / Easter ), to his Ascension and the Assumption of his mother ( Dormition of the Theotokos / Virgin Mary ) in the summer.

In 1950, the pope defined the Assumption of Mary as dogma, the only time that a pope has spoken ex cathedra since papal infallibility was explicitly declared.

Critics have coined the term The Psi Assumption to describe " the assumption that any significant departure from the laws of chance in a test of psychic ability is evidence that something anomalous or paranormal has occurred ... other words assuming what they should be proving.

Pius XII explicitly invoked ex cathedra papal infallibility with the dogma of the Assumption of Mary in his 1950 Apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus.

On 1 November 1950, Pius XII defined the dogma of the Assumption of Mary, namely that she " having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.
