Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne engines powered the Space Shuttle, and the company also supplies booster engines for Delta II rockets and boosters and upper stage engines for Atlas III and V and Delta IV rockets.

Even before delivery of the Atlas, the Navy asked for a more powerful machine using both Williams tubes and drum memory, a machine known as the Atlas II.

Work began in 1950 and the completed Atlas II was delivered to the still-secret NSA in September 1953.

( The Atlas series was intended to be the first generation of American ICBMs and Titan II ( as opposed to Titan I ) was to be the second generation deployed ).

When the storable-fueled Titan II and the solid-fueled Minuteman I were deployed in 1963, the Titan I and Atlas missiles became obsolete.

The trio of rocket engines used in the first stage of the American Atlas I and Atlas II launch vehicles, arranged in a " row ", used parallel staging in a similar way: the outer pair of engines existed as a jettisonable pair which would, after they shut down, drop away with the lowermost outer " skirt " structure of the booster, leaving the central " sustainer " engine to complete the first stage's engine burn towards apogee or orbit.
