The main rishis recorded in the Brahmanas and the Rigveda-Anukramanis include Gritsamada, Vishvamitra, Vamadeva, Atri, Bharadvaja, Vasishta, Angiras, Kaṇva.

Seven Rishis ( the Saptarshi ) are often mentioned in the Brahmanas and later works as typical representatives of the pre-historic or mythical period ; in Shatapatha Brahmana 14. 5. 2. 6 ( Brhad Aranyaka Upanisad ), their names are Uddālaka Āruni ( also called Gautama ), Bharadvaja, Vishvamitra, Jamadagni, Vasishtha, Kashyapa, and Atri.

Vayu Purana extolls his virtues "" Having worshipped a portion of the divine being called Dattatreya, sprung from the race of Atri, he sought and obtained these boons, viz., a thousand arms and a golden chariot that went wheresoever he willed it to go ; the power of restraining wrong by justice ; the conquest of the earth and the disposition to rule it righteously ; invincibility by enemies, and death at the hands of a man who was more powerful than himself.

Besides Angirasa, there were eight other “ Brahmarshi ” s – namely, Marichi, Atri, Pulaha, Pulastya, Kratu, Bhrigu, VasisTha, and Adharva.

He gave Kala to Marichi, Anasuya to Atri, Shradha to Angirasa, Havribhuvu to Pulaha, Gati to Pulastya, Kriya to Kratu, Khyati to Bhrigu, Arundhati to VasisTha, and shanti to Adharva and performed their marriages.

Maharishi Bhrigu, is known to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu the mention of which has been evident in many of his writings.
