After the defeat of the Macriani usurpers, Emperor Gallienus sent his general Aurelius Theodotus to Egypt to secure his hold on the province.

Aurelius Ambrosius, better known in English as Saint Ambrose ( c. 330 – 4 April 397 ), was an archbishop of Milan who became one of the most influential ecclesiastical figures of the 4th century.

Ambrosius Aurelianus, ; called Aurelius Ambrosius in the Historia Regum Britanniae and elsewhere, was a war leader of the Romano-British who won an important battle against the Anglo-Saxons in the 5th century, according to Gildas.

Aurelius, " who showed moderation in all his conduct ," arranged for Hengist to be buried and a mound be raised over his corpse " according to the custom of pagans.

They were mentioned by Julius Caesar in his treatise, The Gallic Wars, and by 391 BC, they were written about by Roman Consul, Quintus Aurelius Symmachus, who received seven of them, " canes Scotici ", as a gift to be used for fighting lions, bears, that in his words, " all Rome viewed with wonder ".

The Urban Prefect Aurelius Anicius Symmachus warned both parties to keep the peace, and wrote to the Emperor Honorius that Eulalius, who had been elected first and in due order, was in the right.

However, it appears that some contemporary and later writers, such as the Christian author Lactantius, and Sextus Aurelius Victor ( who wrote about fifty years later and from uncertain sources ), misunderstood the Tetrarchic system in this respect, believing it to have involved a stricter division of territories between the four emperors.

They send his head to Aurelius, who persuades the Senate to pardon Cassius's family.

Aurelian was born in Serdica ( today Sofia in Bulgaria ) in Moesia or what was later called Dacia Ripensis to an obscure provincial family ; his father was tenant to a senator named Aurelius, who gave his name to the family.

Commodus had an elder twin brother, Titus Aurelius Fulvus Antoninus, who died in 165.

Marcus Aurelius was the first emperor since Vespasian to have a son of his own and, though he himself was the fifth in the line of the so-called Five Good Emperors who had each adopted their successor, it seems to have been his firm intention that Commodus should be his heir.

Unlike the preceding Emperors Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius, he seems to have had little interest in the business of administration and tended throughout his reign to leave the practical running of the state to a succession of favourites, beginning at this time with Saoterus, a freedman from Nicomedia who had become his chamberlain.

The first is a dedication to Aurelius Heraclianus, the prefect involved in the conspiracy against Gallienus, from Traianus Mucianus, who also gave a dedication to Heraclianus ' brother, Aurelius Appollinaris, who was the equestiran governor of the province of Thracia in 267-8 AD.

Pannonia Superior was under the consular legate, who had formerly administered the single province, and had three legions under his control ; Pannonia Inferior at first under a praetorian legate with a single legion as garrison, after Marcus Aurelius under a consular legate, still with only one legion.

The Roman commanders, the proconsul Quintus Servilius Caepio and the consul Gnaeus Mallius Maximus, hindered Roman coordination and so the Cimbri succeeded in first defeating the legate Marcus Aurelius Scaurus and later inflicted a devastating defeat on Caepio and Maximus at the Battle of Arausio.

Augustus, the first Emperor ( r. 27 BC – AD 14 ), had nominally shared power with his colleagues, and more formal offices of co-Emperor had existed from Marcus Aurelius ( r. 161 – 80 ) on.

The philosophy of Epictetus was an influence on the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius ( 121 to 180 AD ) whose reign was marked by wars with the resurgent Parthians in southern Asia and against the Germanic tribes in Europe.

As Marcus Aurelius and his adopted brother Lucius Verus had done a hundred years before them, Gallienus and his father divided the Empire ; Valerian struck for the East to stem the Persian threat and Gallienus remained in Italy to repel the Germanic tribes on the Rhine and Danube.

According to Eutropius and Aurelius Victor, he was particularly energetic and successful in keeping off the Germanic invaders from the German provinces and Gaul, after the weakness caused by Valerian's march on Italy against Aemilianus in 253.

According to Aurelius Victor and Zonaras, on hearing the news of Gallienus ' death, the Senate at Rome ordered the execution of his family ( including his brother Valerianus and son Marinianus ) and their supporters, just before receiving a message from Claudius to spare their lives and deify his predecessor.

He was on his way back west to deal with a Frankish and Alamannic invasion of Gaul when, ( according to Aurelius Victor, Eutropius and the Historia Augusta ), Tacitus died of fever at Tyana in Cappadocia in June 276.

Marcus Aurelius ' Stoic tome Meditations, written in Greek while on campaign between 170 and 180, is still revered as a literary monument to a philosophy of service and duty, describing how to find and preserve equanimity in the midst of conflict by following nature as a source of guidance and inspiration.

The appellation also survives on inscriptions: Birley cites ( at Marcus Aurelius, p. 270 n. 24 ) Prosopographia Imperii Romani < sup > 2 </ sup > A 697, and L ' Année épigraphique 1940. 62.

Geoffrey's composite Merlin is based primarily on Myrddin Wyllt, also called Merlinus Caledonensis, and Aurelius Ambrosius, a mostly fictionalised version of the historical war leader Ambrosius Aurelianus.

The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, on the other hand, can be best thought of as the philosophical reflections of an emperor divided between his philosophical aspirations and the duty he felt to defend the Roman Empire from its external enemies through his various military campaigns.

Representations of slingers can be found on artifacts from all over the ancient world, including Assyrian and Egyptian reliefs, the columns of Trajan and Marcus Aurelius, on coins and on the Bayeux Tapestry.

Later accounts also speak of a Gallic persecution, especially at Lyons, under Severus, but historians, based on archaeological and literary evidence, generally consider these events actually to have taken place under Emperor Marcus Aurelius.
