Axayacatl was a son of the princess Atotoztli II and her cousin, prince Tezozomoc.

Cuitláhuac was the eleventh son of the ruler Axayacatl and a younger brother of Moctezuma II, the previous ruler of Tenochtitlan.

This sculpture was made around 1470 under the rule of King Axayacatl, the predecessor of Tizoc, and is said to tell the history of the Aztecs and a prophecy for the future.

He was a successor of his brother Axayacatl and his other brother was Emperor Ahuitzotl and his sister was the Queen Chalchiuhnenetzin.

While Axayacatl conquered this area, it was a successor, Ahuizotl who had most of the Aztec shrines, temples and other constructions built here.

He married princess Huacaltzintli and had a son Tezozomoc and was a grandfather of Axayacatl, Tizoc and Ahuitzotl.

The fourth temple was constructed between 1440 and 1481 during the reigns of Moctezuma I and Axayacatl.

This area, along with the rest of the Toluca Valley, was conquered by Axayacatl and brought into the Aztec Empire in the 1470s.

In 1468, Motecuzoma I died and was succeeded by his son, Axayacatl.

Axayacatl himself was wounded in the battle, retreated to Tenochtitlan, and never engaged the Tarascans in battle again.

This was followed by the death of Axayacatl in 1481.

Axayacatl was replaced by his brother Tizoc.

During the Aztec invasion of the area, the Tenancingo chief Tezozomoctli, collaborated with Axayacatl to subdue the rival chief Chicaquiauh of Malinalco and to conquer Calpulli de Coapipitzoatepec ( Xochiaca ).

In 1479, Axayacatl launched a major invasion of the Tarascan Empire with 32, 000 Aztec soldiers.

Using as a pretext the insulting behavior of a few Tlatelolcan citizens, Axayacatl invaded his neighbor, killed its ruler, Moquihuix, and replaced him with a military governor.

In 1472, Axayacatl re-conquered the region and successfully defended it from Tarascan attempts to take it back.

During the course of the 15th century AD Tlacaelel served as cihuacoatl under four emperors-Moctezuma I, Axayacatl, Tizoc and Ahuizotl.

However, in 1476, the Aztecs subjected this area to their empire under the rule of Axayacatl.

Around the main plaza, Cortés took over what were the " Old Houses " of Axayacatl and the " New Houses " of Moctezuma, both grand palaces, for his own.

Alvarado, the conquistadors and the Tlaxcalans retreated to their base in the Palace of Axayacatl and secured the entrances.
