Perhaps the best-known ripieno concerto is Johann Sebastian Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3.

The solo, inspired by Mason's performance of Bach's 2nd Brandenburg Concerto with the English Chamber Orchestra, is in a mock-Baroque style for which the piccolo trumpet is particularly suited, having a clean and clear sound which penetrates well through thicker midrange textures.

That same concerto is the source of Bach's Harpsichord Concerto BWV 1053, composed around 1739.

Among the most notable of Joachim's achievements were the revivals of Bach's Sonatas and partitas for solo violin, BWV 1001-1006, and particularly of Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, Op.

Richard Strauss, who scored for the heckelphone on a number of occasions, was an early enthusiast of the piccolo heckelphone, even using it in a performance of Bach's second Brandenburg Concerto, where it played the high trumpet part in the last movement.

These had green labels, and the catalogue included some ambitious items, such as an abridged version ( 1925 ) of Edward Elgar's oratorio The Dream of Gerontius and, from Novello, what has been reported as the first recording of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 ( arranged for piano by Carl Tausig ) and a complete recording of Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto, her sole recording of a work extending over more than two record sides.

The Museum of Non-Objective Painting ( later, The Guggenheim ) commissioned him to synchronize a film with a march by John Philip Sousa in order to demonstrate loyalty to America, and then insisted that he make a film to Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, even though he wanted to make a film without sound in order to affirm the integrity of his non-objective imagery.

During the Soused ( or Brown-Bag ) Period, P. D. Q. Bach wrote a Concerto for Horn & Hardart, a Sinfonia Concertante, a Pervertimento for Bicycle, Bagpipes, and Balloons, a Serenude, a Perückenstück ( literally German for " Hairpiece "), a Suite from The Civilian Barber ( spoofing Rossini's The Barber of Seville ), a Schleptet in E-flat major, the half-act opera The Stoned Guest ( the character of " The Stone Guest " from Mozart's Don Giovanni ), a Concerto for Piano vs. Orchestra, Erotica Variations ( Beethoven's Eroica Variations ), Hansel and Gretel and Ted and Alice, an opera in one unnatural act ( Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel and the 1969 film Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice ), The Art of the Ground Round ( Bach's The Art of Fugue ), a Concerto for Bassoon vs. Orchestra, and a Grand Serenade for an Awful Lot of Winds and Percussion.

He has made 16 transcriptions of works by François Couperin, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Georg Philipp Telemann, and J. S. Bach, including two Brandenburg Concerti in a version for two harpsichords and an orchestration of Bach's Italian Concerto as well as several adaptations in baroque style of Christmas Carols commissioned and recorded by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation ( CBC Radio Charlottetown ) in 1994.

Piano Concerto No. 1, Guitar Concerto No. 1 and the Variations on Bach's Inventions are some of the works of Richard Kearns who is another of Ireland's classical composers.

The group's music has a trademark sound and is used frequently on television ( The West Wing, Sex in the City, Miami Vice, Glee ), in movies ( Bach's Fugue in G Minor ( BWV 578 ) in Thank You for Smoking, Mozart's " Horn Concerto No. 4 " in Wedding Crashers, Bach's " Prelude No. 7 in E flat Well Tempered Clavier-Book 2 BWV 876 " in Milk ).

In 1893 he played for the French organist Charles-Marie Widor ( at Saint-Sulpice, Paris ), for whom Johann Sebastian Bach's organ-music contained a mystic sense of the eternal.

During its preparation he became a friend of Cosima Wagner ( then in Strasbourg ), with whom he had many theological and musical conversations, exploring his view of Bach's descriptive music, and playing the major Chorale Preludes for her at the Temple Neuf.

Bach's music, for whose concerts Schweitzer took the organ part regularly until 1913.

Schweitzer, who insisted that the score should show Bach's notation with no additional markings, wrote the commentaries for the Preludes and Fugues, and Widor those for the Sonatas and Concertos: six volumes were published in 1912 – 14.

J. S. Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was a great proponent of the instrument, and most of his German contemporaries regarded it as a central keyboard instrument, for performing, teaching, composing and practicing.

The fretting of a clavichord provides new problems for some repertoire, but scholarship suggests that these problems are not insurmountable in Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier ().

He looked to older music for inspiration in the art of counterpoint ; the themes of some of his works are modelled on Baroque sources such as Bach's The Art of Fugue in the fugal finale of Cello Sonata No. 1 or the same composer's Cantata No. 150 in the passacaglia theme of the Fourth Symphony's finale.

It was on Bach's recommendation that in 1748 he was able to join Johann Adolph Hasse's court orchestra at Dresden where he remained for ten years.

He excels at the piano, including Bach's works for keyboard instruments.

Historical studies of music are for example concerned with a composer's life and works, the developments of styles and genres ( e. g. baroque concertos ), the social function of music for a particular group of people ( e. g. court music ), or modes of performance at a particular place and time ( e. g. Johann Sebastian Bach's choir in Leipzig ).

Johann Sebastian Bach also wrote six surviving works he called motets ; Bach's motets were relatively long pieces in German on sacred themes for choir and basso continuo, thought to have been written as training pieces for the members of his choir school.

For example, composer Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion, composed in the 1720s, was appropriated by the Nazi regime in the 1930s for propaganda.

Many pieces from the baroque period for solo string instruments, such as Bach's Sonatas and partitas for solo violin and cello, convey subtle harmony through inference rather than full chordal structures.

A point of hot controversy today is the so-called " Rifkin hypothesis ," which re-examines the famous " Entwurff ," Bach's 1730 memo to the Leipzig City Council ( A Short but Most Necessary Draft for a Well Appointed Church Music ) calling for at least 12 singers.

In light of Bach's responsibility to provide music to four churches and be able to perform double choir compositions with a substitute for each voice, Joshua Rifkin concludes that Bach's music was normally written with one voice per part in mind.
