Sir Donald Tovey dedicated his conjectural completion of Bach's Die Kunst der Fuge ( Art of the Fugue ) to Schweitzer.

He looked to older music for inspiration in the art of counterpoint ; the themes of some of his works are modelled on Baroque sources such as Bach's The Art of Fugue in the fugal finale of Cello Sonata No. 1 or the same composer's Cantata No. 150 in the passacaglia theme of the Fourth Symphony's finale.

Bach's " The Art of Fugue " in his hometown Leipzig, and their interpretation of the work was released on the album LAIBACHKUNSTDERFUGE in 2008.

In 1985, Marshall Portnoy in the Musical Quarterly ( Oxford ) suggested that the answer to the enigma was J S Bach's The Art of Fugue.

Scholars have suggested that the Mass in B minor belongs in the same category as the Art of Fugue, as a summation of Bach's deep lifelong involvement with musical tradition — in this case, with choral settings and theology.

Konami's 1983 arcade game Gyruss utilized five synthesis sound chips along with a DAC, which were partly used to create an electronic rendition of J. S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor.

This was in preparation to perform Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor for an audience of 8, 000 people at London's Royal Albert Hall on the second largest pipe organ in the United Kingdom.

Book 2: Preludio, Fuga e Fuga figurata ( Studie nach J. S. Bach's Wohltemperiertem Klavier )-The " Preludio " and " Fuga " are almost unaltered transcriptions of the D major prelude and fugue from the first book of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier.

Johann Sebastian Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier is informally known as The Forty-Eight because it consists of a prelude and a fugue in each major and minor key, for a total of forty-eight pieces.

On first sight of a score, it was not unusual for her draw comparisons from a variety of composers: " these measures have the same harmonic progressions as Bach's F major prelude and Chopin's F major Ballade.

It is important to note, however, that in Bach's cycle the pieces are arranged in parallel major / minor pairs ascending the chromatic scale ( C major, C minor, C sharp major, C sharp minor etc.

As Speerstra and also note, the compass of the keyboard parts of Bach's six organ trio sonatas BWV 525 – 530 rarely go below the tenor C, so could have been played on a single manual pedal clavichord, by moving the left hand down an octave, a customary practice in the 18th century.

The style is most often used in preludes to suites, and can be found in non-staged vocal works such as cantatas, for example in the opening chorus of Bach's cantata Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland, BWV 61.

Keith Emerson contributed a series of treatments of classical pieces ( such as Bach's French Suite No. 1 in D minor, BWV 812 and Bartok's ' Allegro Barbaro '), Carl Palmer provided a drum solo ( called " Tank ") and Greg Lake provided two ballads, beginning with the folky, extended work " Take a Pebble ".

One of the last compositions orchestrated for the mediaeval lituus was Bach's motet O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht ( BWV 118 ).

It has been argued by a musicologist, Ursula Kirkendale that the composition of Johann Sebastian Bach's Das Musikalische Opfer ( The Musical Offering, BWV 1079 ), was closely connected with the Institutio Oratoria.
