Baldur's Gate is a fictional city in the Forgotten Realms campaign setting of the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game.

The city was detailed in Volo's Guide to the Sword Coast, published in 1994, and provided the main setting to the computer game, Baldur's Gate, released in 1998.

Long ago, Balduran sailed to the fabled Anchorome and returned with great wealth which was used to build the wall around what became Baldur's Gate.

Baldur's Gate is ruled by four grand dukes, the Council of Four.

The rulers include Duke Eltan, leader of the Flaming Fist, Belt, a powerful warrior and divine spellcaster, Liia Jannath, a mage, and Entar Silvershield, the richest man in Baldur's Gate, but also a strong warrior in his own right.

Baldur's Gate contains a very effective Thieves Guild, as well as a powerful and honest Merchant's League.

Various thieves guilds have risen and fallen in Baldur's Gate including Xantam's Guild and the Hands of Glory.

A representative of virtually any illegal group operating in Baldur's Gate can usually be found somewhere on the premises.

* Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance series – A trio of adventurers prevent Eldrith the Betrayer, Mistress of the Onyx Tower, from sending her army of minions into Baldur's Gate, as well as managing to destroy the Tower itself.

Mordoc then is able to teleport the Onyx Tower into Baldur's Gate, and both Mordoc and the Onyx Tower must be destroyed so life can return to normal in the city.

Baldur's Gate is a franchise of role-playing video games set in the fictional Forgotten Realms Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting within the fictional continent of Faerûn.

It used, as Baldur's Gate had done, the Infinity Engine ; and was released for Windows in September 2000.

They then cancelled Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance III, possibly due to the fact that the second game in the series sales could not match the combined sales of all re-releases of the first game.

Drizzt also appears in the sequel Baldur's Gate II and will react negatively if the player has imported characters from the first game that killed Drizzt or have any of his unique items.
