John Wesley, the founder of the movement, was not prepared to allow unordained preachers to administer the sacraments: " We believe it would not be right for us to administer either Baptism or the Lord's Supper unless we had a commission so to do from those Bishops whom we apprehend to be in a succession from the Apostles.

The liturgical communities in western Christianity that derive their rituals from the Roman Missal, including those particular communities which use the Roman Missal itself ( Roman Catholics ), the Book of Common Prayer ( Anglicans / Episcopalians ), the Lutheran Book of Worship ( ELCA Lutherans ), Lutheran Service Book ( Missouri-Synod Lutherans ), use the Apostles ' Creed and interrogative forms of it in their rites of Baptism, which they consider to be the first sacrament of initiation into the Church.

Instead, the forms of service that were to be included in the Book of Common Prayer were drawn from the Missal ( for the Mass ), Breviary for the daily office, Manual ( for the occasional services ; Baptism, Marriage, Burial etc.

The business of making the changes was then entrusted to a small committee of bishops and the Privy Council and, apart from tidying up details, this committee introduced into Morning and Evening Prayer a prayer for the Royal Family ; added several thanksgivings to the Occasional Prayers at the end of the Litany ; altered the rubrics of Private Baptism limiting it to the minister of the parish, or some other lawful minister, but still allowing it in private houses ( the Puritans had wanted it only in the church ); and added to the Catechism the section on the sacraments.

The 1928 revised forms of Matrimony and Baptism were quite widely adopted, but those of other rites tended not to be ; the consequence, in practice, being very wide variation in liturgical practice from parish to parish, with very few churchmen adhering consistently to the strict observation of either the 1662 or the 1928 forms of worship.

Article 25 of the Thirty-Nine Articles, speaking of the sacraments, says: " Those five commonly called Sacraments, that is to say, Confirmation, Penance, Orders, Matrimony, and extreme Unction, are not to be counted for Sacraments of the Gospel, being such as have grown partly of the corrupt following of the Apostles, partly are states of life allowed in the Scriptures ; but yet have not like nature of Sacraments with Baptism, and the Lord's Supper, for that they have not any visible sign or ceremony ordained of God.

Saving ordinances ( or ordinances viewed as necessary for salvation ) include: Baptism by immersion after the age of accountability ( normally age 8 ); Confirmation and reception of the Gift of the Holy Ghost, performed by laying hands on the head of a newly baptized member ; ordination to the Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthoods for males ; an Endowment ( including washing and anointing ) received in temples ; and Marriage ( or sealing ) to a spouse.

Catholic exorcisms can occur only under the authority of a bishop and in accordance with strict rules ; a simple exorcism also occurs during Baptism ( CCC 1673 ).
