Three railway stations — those of the German, French and Swiss networks — lie within the city ( although the Swiss ( Basel SBB ) and French ( Bâle SNCF ) stations are actually in the same complex, separated by Customs and Immigration facilities ).

The Basel Regional S-Bahn, the commuter rail network connecting to suburbs surrounding the city, is jointly operated by SBB, SNCF and DB.

The new highspeed ICE railway line from Karlsruhe to Basel was completed in 2008 while phase I of the TGV Rhin-Rhône line, opened in December 2011, has reduced travel time from Basel to Paris to about 3 hours.

Within Switzerland, Basel was chosen largely because of its location, with excellent railway connections in all directions, especially important at a time when most international travel was by train.

" Joint stations " are often found near borders where two state-owned railway companies meet, for example, Basel Badischer Bahnhof.

There is a railway junction at Olten with direct trains to Geneva, Zurich, Basel and the Ticino via Lucerne.

Cisalpino AG was a railway company operating international trains between Switzerland and Italy connecting Basel, Schaffhausen, Zürich, Geneva, Milan, Venice, Trieste, Livorno, and Florence.

Olten's railway station is within 30 minutes of Zurich, Bern, Basel, and Lucerne by train, and is a rail hub of Switzerland.

The city stands on the Marne River and is situated on the railway linking Paris and Basel, which runs over a 52 m tall and 600 m long viaduct built in 1856.

Today Offenburg station lies at the crossroads of a number of railway lines, the most important of which is the Rhine Valley Railway the main line between Karlsruhe and Basel with regular Intercity Express ( ICE ) services to Basel, Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Frankfurt Airport and Amsterdam.

A railway marshalling yard linking Weil am Rhein to Basel was built in 1913.

Long-distance trains stop at the station ( some even to Amsterdam and Basel ) as well as regional and local services.

Basel is a major train station of Switzerland, connected to Paris, Brussels and Berlin with direct fast trains.

Mulhouse has its own SNCF station, Gare de Mulhouse, with a direct connection to Basel in Switzerland and several other regional and national destinations, including Paris, Strasbourg, Lyon and Besançon.

At his death, he was working on designs for a fountain commissioned by the city of Winterthur in 1991, Switzerland, and a new glass facade for a railroad station in Basel, Switzerland.

This period also saw the introduction of Christianity to the region when the Basel Mission set up a station at Eséka.

The city is also connected by rail to major hubs at Singen and Radolfzell ( direct connection ), the German station in Basel, Friedrichshafen, Ulm ( direct connection ), and Constance.
