Battery Park City is a planned community at the southwestern tip of lower Manhattan in New York City, United States.

The neighborhood, which is the site of the World Financial Center along with numerous housing, commercial and retail buildings, is named for adjacent Battery Park.

Battery Park City is owned and managed by the Battery Park City Authority ( BPCA ), a public-benefit corporation created by New York State under the authority of the Urban Development Corporation.

However, in July 2006, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Governor George Pataki, and Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr. announced the final approval for the New York City Housing Trust Fund derived from $ 130 million in Battery Park City revenues.

South of the World Financial Center lies the majority of Battery Park City's residential areas, in three sections: " Gateway Plaza ", a high-rise building complex ; the " Rector Place Residential Neighborhood " and the " Battery Place Residential Neighborhood ".

As of the 2000 census, there were 7, 951 people residing in Battery Park City.

As of 2007, about 10, 000 people live in Battery Park City, most of whom are upper middle class and upper class ( 54. 0 % of households have incomes over $ 100, 000 ).

Throughout the 19th century and early 20th century, the area adjoining today's Battery Park City was known as the Greek quarter ; a long-standing reminder of the ethnic past was the former St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, which was destroyed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks.

The various groups reached a compromise, and in 1966 the governor unveiled the proposal for what would become Battery Park City.

In 1968, the New York State Legislature created the Battery Park City Authority ( BPCA ) to oversee development.

In 1979, the title to the landfill was transferred from the city to the Battery Park City Authority, which financially restructured itself and created a new, more viable master plan, designed by Alex Cooper and Stanton Eckstut.

The Urban Land Institute ( ULI ) awarded the Battery Park City Master Plan its 2010 Heritage Award, for having " facilitated the private development of 9. 3 million square feet of commercial space, 7. 2 million square feet of residential space, and nearly 36 acres of open space in lower Manhattan, becoming a model for successful large-scale planning efforts and marking a positive shift away from the urban renewal mindset of the time.

Throughout the 1980s, the Battery Park City Authority oversaw a great deal of construction, including the entire Rector Place neighborhood and the river esplanade.

It was during that period that current City Planning Department Director Amanda Burden worked on Battery Park City.

In the early 1990s, Battery Park City became the new home of the Stuyvesant High School.

By the turn of the 21st century, Battery Park City was mostly completed, with the exception of some ongoing construction on West Street.

Current residential neighborhoods of Battery Park City are divided into a north and south section, separated by the World Financial Center Complex.

There is currently no subway access in Battery Park City, proper.

The Battery Park City Ferry Terminal is at the foot of Vesey Street opposite the New York Mercantile Exchange and provides ferry transportation to various points in New Jersey.

According to a controversial theory, the Parthians may have had knowledge of electroplating, based on the 1936 discovery of the Baghdad Battery, which resembles a galvanic cell, though it is uncertain whether the artifact was electrical in nature.

Public access is by ferry from either Communipaw Terminal in Liberty State Park ( Jersey City ) or from Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan.

* 1900 – American Civil War: Sergeant William Harvey Carney is awarded the Medal of Honor, for his heroism in the Assault on the Battery Wagner in 1863.

Battery power is used by many garden railway and larger scale systems because of the difficulty in obtaining reliable power supply through the rails outdoors and because the high power consumption and thus current draw of large scale garden models is more easily and safely met with rechargeable batteries.

The city is hoping to get Battery Park North and South open in the next two days.

A specialty platoon of the 3rd US Infantry Regiment ( The Old Guard ), the Presidential Salute Battery is based at Fort Myer, Virginia.

Battery Park City is a residential area built on reclaimed land along the Hudson River in lower Manhattan featuring jogging trails as well as residential apartments.

To fire the missile, a BCU ( Battery Coolant Unit ) is inserted into the handguard.

Although it is not confirmed, the Parthian Battery may have been the first system used for electroplating.

The event in Battery Park City is co-hosted by the Swedish consulate and NYC Parks Department.

The site is located within Battery Kemble Park, bounded by Chain Bridge Road, MacArthur Boulevard, 49th Street, and Nebraska Avenue, NW.

To the north, the suburb is bounded by Malabar Headland which features the Malabar Battery, a World War II fortification complex.

The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks had a major impact on Battery Park City.

* 1863 – American Civil War: Battle of Fort Wagner / Morris Island – the first formal African American military unit, the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, supported by several white regiments, attempts an unsuccessful assault on Confederate-held Battery Wagner.

Battery locomotives are also used on many underground railways for maintenance operations, as they are required when operating in areas where the electricity supply has been temporarily disconnected.

Battery life was a much bigger issue before handheld systems had built-in rechargeable batteries ; gamers needed either a constant supply of six AA batteries, or a rechargeable Ni-Cd battery pack that was sold separately and clipped on a user's belt or onto the back of the Game Gear using the clips and screw holes.

Although the Kuhl incident received the most publicity, Patton slapped and berated a second soldier, Private Paul G. Bennett of C Battery, 17th Field Artillery, 1st Infantry Division, under similar circumstances on August 10, 1943 at the 93rd Evacuation Hospital.

Around the late 18th century to early 19th century, on the Illinois side of the Ohio River, north of Cave-In-Rock, Jonathan Brown led a small gang of river pirates at Battery Rock.
