The Great Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross and the Beheading of St. John the Baptist are normally observed as strict fast days, but if they fall on a Saturday or Sunday, the fast is lessened.

Beheading typically refers to the act of intentional decapitation, e. g., as a means of murder or execution ; it may be accomplished, for example, with an axe, sword, knife, wire, or by other more sophisticated means such as a guillotine.

Beheading by guillotine survived in West Germany until 1949 and in East Germany until 1966.
