In the Quebec expedition, in which his patron Wolfe was killed, Barré was wounded by a bullet in the cheek and lost the use of his left eye, and was among the group gathered around the dying Wolfe, immortalised in Benjamin West's celebrated picture.

However the Americans Copley and Benjamin West led the artists who successfully showed that trousers could be used in heroic scenes, with works like West's The Death of General Wolfe ( 1770 ) and Copley's The Death of Major Peirson, 6 January 1781 ( 1783 ), although the trouser was still being carefully avoided in The Raft of the Medusa, completed in 1819.

In 1760, encouraged by William Smith, Allen sponsored the young painter Benjamin West's trip to Italy, establishing a £ 100 line of credit on which West could rely and, in a letter of introduction in 1760, calling him " a young ingenious Painter of this City, who is desirous to improve himself in that Science, by visiting Florence & Rome.

The ante-chapel contains statues of many famous Trinity men, including Roubiliac's sculpture of Isaac Newton, and the altarpiece is Benjamin West's St Michael and the Devil.

He also completed the plate of Benjamin West's " Landing of Charles II " which William Woollett had left unfinished at the time of his death, engraved some of the illustrations by artists who travelled with Captain Cook on his famous voyages, and J. H. Benwell's " Children in the Wood ".
