He did not use Bernadotte in Sweden but founded the royal dynasty there by that name.

Bernadotte and Désirée had only one son, Oscar I of Sweden and Norway.

He was elected partly because a large part of the Swedish Army, in view of future complications with Russia, were in favour of electing a soldier, and partly because Bernadotte was also very popular in Sweden, owing to the kindness he had shown to the Swedish prisoners during the recent war with Denmark.

Although the Swedish government, amazed at Mörner's effrontery, at once placed him under arrest on his return to Sweden, the candidature of Bernadotte gradually gained favor and on 21 August 1810 he was elected to be the Crown Prince and was made the Commander-in-chief of the Swedish Armed Forces.

Oscar I ( born Joseph François Oscar Bernadotte ; 4 July 1799 – 8 July 1859 ) was King of Sweden and Norway from 1844 to his death.

When, in August 1810, his father Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte was elected Crown Prince of Sweden, Oscar and his mother moved from Paris to Stockholm ( June 1811 ).

The Swedish Crown Prince Charles XIV John of Sweden | Charles John ( Bernadotte ), who staunchly opposed Norwegian independence, only to offer generous terms of union After brief fighting, the peace established a personal union between the two states.

Shortly thereafter, Bernadotte took up the offer from Sweden to fill the vacant position of Crown Prince there.

Initially of low standing, Gustav rose to lead the rebel movement following the bloodbath in which his father was executed, and his election as King on June 6, 1523 ( currently recognised as the National holiday of Sweden ) and his triumphant entry into Stockholm eleven days later meant the end of Medieval Sweden's elective monarchy as well as the Kalmar Union, which had united the Nordic kingdoms since 1397, and the commencing of a hereditary monarchy under the House of Vasa which, currently under the House of Bernadotte, continues to date.

With Louis unable to defend his realm, France sent 80, 000 militiamen, commanded by future King of Sweden Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte and successfully repelled the invasion.

He was the son of Count Oscar Bernadotte of Wisborg ( formerly Prince Oscar of Sweden, Duke of Gotland ) and his wife Ebba Munck af Fulkila.

Bernadotte was born in Pau, France, as the son of Jean Henri Bernadotte ( Pau, Béarn, 14 October 1711 – Pau, 31 March 1780 ), procurator at Pau, and wife ( married at Boëil-Bezing, 20 February 1754 ) Jeanne de Saint-Vincent ( Pau, 1 April 1728 – Pau, 8 January 1809 ).

In the war against Austria, Bernadotte led the Saxon contingent at the Battle of Wagram ( 6 July 1809 ), on which occasion, on his own initiative, he issued an Order of the Day attributing the victory principally to the valour of his Saxons, which order Napoleon at once disavowed.

Napoleon once commented after a battle that " Bernadotte hesitates at nothing.

The first group of observers to serve in Palestine under the UN Mediator, Count Folke Bernadotte, arrived in Rhodes at 6 P. M. GMT 20 July.

Bernadotte attended school in Stockholm, after which he entered training to become a cavalry officer at the Military Academy Karlberg.

On 22 August at Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz, Charles brushed aside one of Jourdan's divisions under MG Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte.

On 23 August, at the Battle of Grossbeeren, south of Berlin, Crown Prince Charles of Sweden ( formerly French Marshal Bernadotte, Napoleon's own Marshal ) defeated his old comrade Marshal Oudinot.

To the west, Maréchal Bernadotte, in command of the Saxon IX Corps, was preparing his own assault, planning to attack the Austrians at Deutsch-Wagram from the west.

This attack was delayed, as Bernadotte had to wait for the arrival of Zezschwitz's division, but, at around 21: 00, the Saxons moved towards the village.

Late that night, the French Corps commanders reunited at the Emperor's headquarters at Raasdorf ; only Bernadotte was absent, as he was still struggling to rally his routed infantry at Aderklaa.

Towards 04: 00, seeing that the enemy had taken position in and around the village, Bernadotte assembled his artillery in a battery of 26 pieces, which began to bombard Aderklaa, but the Austrian heavy artillery at Deutsch-Wagram responded by releasing a devastating counter-battery fire, which knocked out 15 Saxon pieces during the following three hours.

For the Emperor, the sight of Bernadotte riding at the head of the disorderly mob and making no apparent attempt to rally his men, was the last straw.

The French were separated in two massive rings at this point: the forces of Ney, Lannes and Murat to the west were containing Mack, while those of Soult, Davout, Bernadotte and Marmont to the east were charged with guarding against any possible Russian and Austrian incursions.

The Act of Succession was adopted by the Riksdag of the Estates assembled at Örebro in 1810, upon electing Charles XIV John ( Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte ) as the heir to King Charles XIII.
