The Bishop of Ely had been ordered to turn his palace Wisbech Castle into an internment centre for Catholics, and for the first time in years Watson had friends around him.

This was in response to An Address to the People of Great Britain ( 1798 ), by Richard Watson, Bishop of Llandaff, which argues that national taxes should be raised to pay for the war against France and to reduce the national debt.

The churchyard contains the graves of John Charles Ryle, the first Anglican Bishop of Liverpool, and his wife, and the grave of the poet William Watson.

An autobiography Anecdotes of the life of Richard Watson, Bishop of Landaff was finished in 1814 and published posthumously in 1817.
